Small Luxury Hotels of the World is pleased to welcome La Sultana Hotel and Spa as a new member for 2006 which is now the brand’s second property in addition to Kasbah Agafay in Marrakech, Morocco; a vibrant city that harkens back to a time of Arabian splendour. Just a short trip from Western and Central Europe, the city of Marrakech was founded around 1062 by the Berber Almoravids and soon became the capital of an Islamic empire that reached from central Spain to West Africa. Today, the name Marrakech conjures up images of an exotic city with hot desert winds blowing in from the Sahara, of magic carpets and snake charmers, spices and perfumes. The city has a labyrinth of winding streets that open on to lush green gardens and dark alleyways leading to bustling bazaars known as souks, a bustling marketplace selling herbs and spices, carpets, candles, jewellery and metalwork. The focal point of Marrakech is the central square, known as Jemaa-el-Fna, which comes to life after dark with a riot of colour, sound and scents. Rows of trestle tables are set up every evening to serve up barbecued kebabs and mouth-watering "tajines".
Marrakech is situated at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains, which are snow-capped for much of the year in contrast to the desert heat of the city. Summers can be very hot, but winter is bright and crisp, while autumn brings delicious fresh produce into the markets and spring sees the Atlas Mountains covered in flowers.
