Hubert Joly, president and chief executive officer of Carlson, and Carlson family member and businessman Richard C. Gage have been elected to the Carlson Board of Directors, Carlson Chairman Marilyn Carlson Nelson announced today.
Joly, who has served as Carlson's president and CEO since March 2008, becomes the 10th member of the expanded board.
Gage is CEO and founder of Nebulous/YourMLSsearch.com, a national real estate technology leader. He replaces his brother, Scott C. Gage, who has served on the board since 2006. The election is part of a plan to rotate third-generation Carlson family members on and off the board every three years.
"In his first 10 months as CEO of Carlson, Hubert has earned respect from the board members and family for his leadership, his extensive experience leading global enterprises, his impact, and his appreciation for Carlson's commitment to the communities in which we operate," Nelson said.
Other members of the Carlson Board of Directors are: Lee A. Chaden, retired chairman, Hanesbrands Inc.; Harald Einsmann, operating partner, Equity Partners; Barbara Carlson Gage, president, Carlson Family Foundation; Edwin C. "Skip" Gage, chairman and CEO, Gage Marketing Group; Diana L. Nelson, trustee, Curtis L. Carlson Family Foundation; Glen D. Nelson, M.D., chairman, GDN Holdings, LLC; and Lawrence Perlman, former chairman of Arbitron Inc., retired chairman and CEO of Ceridian Corporation, and former chairman of Seagate Technology.
Family-owned Carlson operates in four business sectors: hotels, marketing, restaurants and travel.
"I look forward to serving on the Carlson board, which I deeply respect for its professionalism," Joly said. "Our board is focused on creating long-term value in each of our businesses, for the benefit of our customers, our employees and our owners."
Prior to becoming Carlson's president and CEO, Joly, 49, served as president and CEO of Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT), a global leader in business travel management. Under his leadership, CWT grew its sales from USD 8.9 billion in 2003 to USD 25 billion in 2007. He is now chair of the CWT board of directors. He also recently became the vice chair of the Rezidor Hotel Group board of directors.
Joly is a business administration graduate of HEC Paris and a public administration graduate of the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris. He is a member of the executive committee of the World Travel and Tourism Council, serves on the board of trustees of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and recently became a member of the executive committee of the Minnesota Business Partnership. He was honored as one of the 25 Most Influential Executives of the Business Travel Industry (2006) by Business Travel News magazine. He was also elected a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum (Davos, 1997).
