Sonia Cheng has been appointed chairman of New World Hospitality, the hotel management arm of Hong Kong-based New World Group conglomerate.
Ms. Cheng joined New World Group in 2008 as principal director - hotel division, concurrently holding the position of executive vice chairman of New World Hospitality.
“Sonia has successfully launched a series of repositioning initiatives for New World Hospitality and its brands while securing ample opportunities for its aggressive expansion,” said Dr Cheng, managing director of New World Development Company Limited.
Before joining New World Hospitality, Ms. Cheng worked with a major international investment bank and a global American private equity firm, specialising in real estate investments. She is currently a member of the Advisory Committee on Hotel and Tourism Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Ms. Cheng holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Mathematics with concentration in Economics from Harvard University.
Hong Kong-based New World Hospitality manages the New World Hotels brand of deluxe properties in Dalian, Shanghai, Wuhan, Ho Chi Minh City and Manila, with two affiliated hotels in Shenyang and Shunde, as well as the select service pentahotels brand currently represented in Shanghai and Beijing. The group has more than 20 properties under development. The company is a member of New World Group, a Hong Kong-based leading conglomerate and principal investor in many New World Hospitality properties.
