Through this collaboration, the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management at the university will co-create research projects with the Alliance, aimed at advancing the vision of Net Positive Hospitality for the industry.

The partnership between the University of South Carolina and the Alliance will focus on research projects that foster increased knowledge in sustainable hospitality and tourism, crisis management, resilience, water risk, climate change, and carbon footprint.

This joint effort aligns with the Alliance's five-year Pathway to Net Positive strategy, which was launched earlier this year and emphasizes research, training, and development as key pillars of its approach.

The University of South Carolina, known for its leadership in tourism and economic development, currently spearheads the Richardson Family SmartState Center for Economic Excellence.

The center's dedication to generating data-driven insights that support the growth of tourism economies perfectly complements the objectives of the partnership.

As a new partner of the Alliance, the University of South Carolina joins nearly 50 donor and affiliate members globally, collectively representing a reach of over 7 million rooms.

The Alliance brings together engaged hospitality companies, the wider hospitality value chain, and strategic partners to address the pressing challenges affecting the planet, people, and places worldwide.

Lori Pennington-Gray, Ph.D. Endowed Professor and Director of the University of South Carolina stated, "The Richardson Family SmartState Center is thrilled to be working with the Alliance on innovative, cutting-edge research to aid the industry in sustainable development and practices. We are committed to timely projects that will focus in the areas of Risk management, water quality, crisis management, advocacy and knowledge building.”

Glenn Mandziuk, Chief Executive Officer of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, expressed his excitement about the addition of the University of South Carolina to the Alliance's network, saying, "This partnership is a commitment to the future generation of leaders within the hospitality sector. At the heart of our five-year strategy is research, training, and development, ensuring that every employee in the sector is skilled in sustainability challenges and solutions. The University of South Carolina joins our network of partners as crucial researchers and educators, enabling the Alliance to help the sector deliver Net Positive Hospitality."
