Michelin is today unveiling the 2014 MICHELIN guide Switzerland. This new edition of the guide presents more than 887 restaurants and 852 hotels across the country.

This year’s guide features a new two-star restaurant – Parkotel Vitznau-Restaurant Focus – where chef Nenad Mlinarevic has developed a contemporary culinary style that features a very personal touch.

Using high-quality ingredients, his cuisine offers subtle contrasts of blends and a masterful harmony of savors. With this new addition, Switzerland now has 19 two-star restaurants, illustrating the excellence of the country’s fine dining scene.

The 2014 edition of the MICHELIN guide also features 15 new one-star restaurants, reflecting the vitality of Swiss gourmet cooking and the very high quality cuisine in the country’s major cities. Of the new starred establishments, three are in Geneva – Bayview, Il Lago and Le Focon – and two are in Zurich – Mesa and Le Pavillon at Hôtel Bauer au Lac.

The country's two three-star restaurants – Schauenstein in Fürstenau and Hôtel de Ville in Crissier – once again received the guide’s highest honors this year. Considered the supreme international distinction in the world of gourmet dining, a three-star rating in the MICHELIN guide has been awarded to just over 100 restaurants around the world.

Switzerland has never before had so many starred restaurants – 110 in all – representing a 30% increase in just four years.

The Bib Gourmand label continues to be popular among customers and restaurant owners. It is awarded to restaurants that offer quality cooking and a full meal (starter, main course and dessert) for 35 euros or less. With 12 new listings in the 2014 guide, Switzerland now has 94 Bib Gourmand restaurants.

Thanks to a uniform, rigorous selection process applied in 23 countries, the MICHELIN guide is an international benchmark for gourmet dining. All of the restaurants featured in the selection were selected by the MICHELIN guide’s famous inspectors who, following a demanding training period, anonymously travel the roads of Switzerland in search of the best addresses. They apply the same methods used for decades by MICHELIN guide inspectors throughout the world to ensure a uniform, international standard of excellence. Stars are awarded on a consensus basis according to five criteria that are the same everywhere around the world: product quality, preparation and flavors, the chef's personality as revealed through his or her cuisine, value for money, and consistency over time and across the entire menu. These criteria are adapted to each type of cuisine. As a guarantee of complete objectivity, Michelin inspectors pay all their bills in full.
