The President Shinya Tasaki made a few welcoming remarks, "The twelve successive bet sommeliers will get together for the first time in Tokyo to welcome this contest, although we miss one best sommelier who cannot come to Japan. I am proud of having the 14th contest here at the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa where I became the world best sommelier in 1995. Five years ago under the late Mr. Kazuyoshi Kogai, ex A.S.I. Presidnet, it was decided that the 14th Contest would be held in Tokyo. Tomorrow is the anniversary of Mr. Kogai's death. I hope that this contest will be truly successful with the help of the participants." Next Serge Dubs, Vice president for the European Continent explained about the contest in detail. He said "We found something new every year. What kind of discovery will we have? The contest include a written test, tasting a variety of wine, service presentation in a foreign language other than the candidate's mother tongue, finding the mistakes on the wine lists, marriage between wine and food. The contest will be rather difficult. I wish the candidates success!" Thus he is full of enthusiasm for 57 candidates including 6 female candidates.
The Best Sommelier of the World for the current 13th contest, Gerard Basset sent back the trophy with all the winners' names engraved. Who is going to get the trophy this time?
At 18:30 the welcoming dinner started organized by the official sponsor Suntory. The invited participants included the candidates their families, the executives from the A.S.I. member nations, reporters for the press conference. Masaharu Oka President of the Japan Sommelier Association made a few welcome remarks. The participants enjoyed Japanese wine, sushi, tempura, and sukiyaki. All the candidates enjoyed exchanging information. We wish them success!
