Carlson Hotels Worldwide Expands New York Presence With Historic Midtown Manhattan Hotel

Carlson Hotels Worldwide is expanding its portfolio in New York City with the reflagging of a 532-room historic hotel located in the heart of the west side of midtown Manhattan. The hotel, historically known as The Martinique, is undergoing a $10 million renovation which is touching virtually all public spaces and guest rooms in the property. It will become the Radisson Hotel Martinique on July 1, 2006.
The hotel is located on the corner of Broadway and 32nd Street, minutes from the Empire State Building, Herald Square, Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. Times Square and the theater district are located within walking distance of the hotel.

“We are very proud to be adding this significant hotel to our portfolio. Its prime location in the heart of New York City and its old world charm make it an ideal hotel for both the business and leisure traveler,” said Nancy Johnson, executive vice president and brand leader of full-service hotels, Carlson Hotels Worldwide, the Americas. “Combined with the Radisson Hotel Lexington, which is also going through the final stages of a major renovation, Carlson Hotels Worldwide now offers two premier hotels with over 1,200 rooms in the country’s top hotel market,” she added.

Built in 1897, the soon-to-be Radisson Hotel Martinique retains its historic French Renaissance architecture, including an original marble winding staircase leading to all floors and an original mosaic tile floor in the lobby. The hotel has been the site of many major meetings, including the formation of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America, which took place in the hotel’s executive boardroom on April 10, 1916.

The hotel’s 532 guestrooms and suites, including the Atrium Penthouse, which features a Jacuzzi and rooftop views of the Empire State Building, are newly renovated and feature two-line phones with voice mail, wireless Internet access, a Sony Playstation, and personal computerized climate control. Several rooms will also feature Radisson’s signature SLEEP NUMBER® bed. New flat-screen televisions will be installed in each room by September 2006.

The hotel features two restaurants – Kum GangSan, which offers Asian cuisine, and the all-day Café Martinique, featuring international and American cuisine. A new French bistro will open in September, and a new supper club, harkening back to the hotel’s turn-of-the-century origins, will open in 2007. The hotel’s International Day Spa offers massages, facials, wraps, saunas and a fitness center.

The hotel currently features 14,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a grand ballroom with breakout rooms and an executive boardroom, with plans to add an additional 6,000 square feet of meeting space. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel, and the hotel’s business center also offers printing and faxing services, a copy center and shipping services.

A New Look at The Radisson Lexington Hotel

The Radisson Lexington Hotel, located on the corner of Lexington Avenue and 48th Street, is also in the final stages of a major renovation. All 705 guestrooms and suites are being upgraded with new furnishings including Herman Miller task chairs, granite desks, enhanced bedding, and deluxe rooms now feature Sleep Number beds.

The hotel’s fitness center and business center have both been renovated with the business center featuring five new PC stations, printers and a 50” flat screen high-definition television. The lobby is also being renovated, and the hotel now features three newly-renovated restaurants: Dynasty, serving Chinese cuisine; Raffles, a coffee shop offering snacks and light meals; and the brand-new Alma Grill, which opened in May 2006 and features contemporary American cuisine with Latin, Asian and French influences.

“The revitalization of The Radisson Hotel Lexington and the addition of the Radisson Hotel Martinique bring strength to the new vision of the Radisson brand,

offering our customers a high quality hospitality experience, ‘Yes, I Can’ service philosophy and key locations in major destination markets,” said Johnson. “In 2005 and 2006, more than $500 million have been invested by Radisson hotel owners, including Carlson Hotels Worldwide, in renovations and upgrades to Radisson Hotels & Resorts in the Americas,” she added.
