Calgary Tops List with 11% Drop

Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the October Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report. This monthly report features the top 5 cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that will maximize their travel dollars. Calgary, made the top of the list with an 11 percent drop, followed by Niagara Falls and Montreal, which both dropped by 10 percent.

The popularity of fall business travel in Canada sends workers to large business centers like Vancouver and Toronto, which gives prices a boost. But the drop-off in leisure travel means good deals are still open for casual travelers in spots like Calgary, the gateway to Banff and the Rockies and Niagara Falls according to the October report.

Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory, which means that customers will find deals that they won't see anywhere else, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.

When compared to the same time last year, the top 5 hotel price reductions for October 2009 include:

Rank Hotel Market Price Drop Example of CAD$/Night
a Current
Hotwire Deal,

1 Calgary, AB 11% 4-star $104
2 Niagara Falls, ON 10% 4-star $115
3 Montreal, QC 10% 4-star $104
4 Quebec City, QC 10% 4-star $104
5 Vancouver, BC 9% 5-star $122

"October is a popular time for business travel in locations such as Toronto and Vancouver," said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. "The increased business travel leads to relative price stabilization for cities like Toronto and Vancouver, but this means good deals for casual travelers outside of the business centers before the winter weather sets in."

About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report

The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
