Tens of thousands of Californians, including a pledge of 1,000 California Fairmont Hotels & Resorts colleagues, friends and family members will gather along the beaches, shorelines, and inland waterways of the state on Saturday, September 19, 2009 to clear away the debris that has been deposited over the past year.

California Coastal Cleanup Day is the state’s premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. In 2008, more than 70,000 volunteers worked together to collect more than 1,600,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. California Coastal Cleanup Day has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 800,000 Californians have removed more than 13 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast.

When: Saturday, September 19th, from 9 am to noon in most locations.

Where: Cleanups will take place at over 750 sites on California beaches, bays, rivers, creeks, parks, roadsides, and highways. Call the local coordinator for exact locations and other site-specific information. For further detail, visit California Coastal’s web site at www.coast4u.org.

Why: “California Coastal Cleanup Day is a significant coastal protection and restoration volunteer event and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts of California is a proud sponsor of this effort, says Tom Klein, Regional Vice-President of Operations and General Manager at the Fairmont San Francisco. Over a century ago Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was founded on an enduring connection to the land, communities and people where we do business. Energizing our commitment to 'think globally and act locally', we are proud to support hotel-based environmental initiatives that encourage partnerships and learning while addressing a universal environmental issue in a way that hits close to home. Coastal Cleanup Day teaches all Californians that our everyday actions have broad implications for the well-being of our oceans and the habitat and wildlife that depend on them.”

How: Call 1 (800) COAST-4U or visit www.coast4u.org for more information.

The Coastal Commission is sensitive to the scheduling conflict this year (which coincides with the first day of Rosh Hashanah) and regrets that some volunteers may not be able to participate. If you are unable to join on September 19th, this year please visit http://www.coastal.ca.gov/publiced/coastweeks/coastweeks.html pages for alternative events and activities taking place during the three weeks after the Cleanup. Thanks for your understanding.
