Orient-Express Hotels has opened two new pool bars in Rio de Janeiro and Venice, so even when the sun goes down, the festivities continue at these legendary hotels.
Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic beachfront landmark, The Copacabana Palace, opens a new lounge bar this month. The substantial 250 m² bar is set to be one of the highlights of Rio’s nightlife, with a dramatic birdcage shaped entrance and a meandering pathway made from glistening, golden bronze bricks, which lead to a large circular dance floor in the middle of the room.
The walls and ceiling are decorated with thousands of intricate fibre optic lights, outlining the constellations of the southern hemisphere above. With illuminated multi-coloured columns and a bar made from hundreds of gold Murano tiles, the Copacabana Palace Lounge Bar is a spectacular place to see…and be seen in!
A range of signature cocktails is offered, including the Copa, with premium vodka, Limoncello and caviar; and the Negresco, with black tea, Vodka, Sambuca Opal Nera and gold flakes. Two of the Martini based cocktails are named after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers who performed together for the first time at the hotel, while filming the movie "Flying down to Rio" in 1933. Executive Chef, Francesco Carli, has also developed a bar menu, consisting of traditional snacks with a modern twist.
The Bar has a busy live music calendar for all days of the week and its own resident performers, the Copa Jam Band, plays classic and contemporary Brazilian songs along with a mix of international jazz and pop. Special guests and DJs are invited each week to liven-up the dance floor.
The Lounge Bar at Copacabana Palace has been designed by Graham Viney, who also created the contemporary Planet Bar at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town, which has attracted guests such as Robbie Williams, Kate Moss and Joseph Fiennes.
In Venice, Hotel Cipriani has finished a second phase of refurbishments, which included the restoration of Bar Gabbiano. Located next to the hotel’s famous swimming pool, the bar aims to become the heart of the hotel, with live music and a lively atmosphere for guests and local Venetians to meet.
Guests can choose from a large selection of cocktails, including the Cipriani’s famous Bellini. Alternatively, they may wish to indulge in a ‘Buona Notte’ cocktail, which was created for George Clooney when he stayed at the hotel after a special screening of his film ‘Good Night, Good Luck’ at the 62nd Venice Film Festival. The cocktail is a refreshing blend of diced lemon, sugar, vodka, cranberry juice, ginger and angostura bitters.
In 2008, Hotel Cipriani began a three-year refurbishment plan of the rooms, Casanova Spa and public spaces. Last year the hotel renovated ten rooms and suites located in the Redentore and San Giorgio wings, by Interior designer, Michel Jouannet of Paris. In the first quarter, 2009, 11 rooms were refurbished in the San Marco wing, located in the back of the house with views of the Antique Gardens of the property. The total number of rooms has been reduced by three keys, bringing the total number in the hotel to 95. By reducing the number of keys, the newly renovated rooms are more spacious, with larger windows, balconies and terraces.
