The Maldives’ best-kept secret is out with the first anniversary celebrations of Angsana Velavaru. Located in the virtually untouched South Nilandhe Atoll, some 146km from Malé, Angsana Velavaru encompasses the true Maldivian island experience. Since it opened in 2007, Angsana Velavaru has been feted for its turquoise lagoon and spacious pool villas, being one of the few resorts in the secluded southern reaches of the Maldives.
The island resort is a scenic 40-minute seaplane journey from Malé International Airport, providing a fresh perspective of the pearl-like atolls and remarkable coral formations that have made Maldives the world’s premier beach destination. “Velavaru” translates as ‘Turtle Island’ in the indigenous language of Dhivehi, and true to its name, Angsana Velavaru provides a back-to-nature experience yet with a complete range of activities for friends, loved ones and the whole family.
Getting To Know You
Every moment spent at Angsana Velavaru is an opportunity to discover this unexplored part of the Maldives archipelago, away from the maddening crowd. It is the perfect location to test the open seas on a traditional dhoni where guests can explore the pristine marine world by scuba diving, snorkelling, and ecologically controlled line fishing. For water sport lovers, the Dive Centre offers an active range of sea activities including wind surfing, catamaran sailing and wakeboarding. A fully equipped PADI Gold Palm 5 Star diver centre provides further confidence for beginner and advanced divers, accompanied by veteran instructors from all around the globe.
In line with Banyan Tree’s commitment to embrace the environment, a Marine Lab has been specially set up at Angsana Velavaru. Guests can join regularly scheduled Marine Biology classes to immerse themselves in marine conservation and participate in on-going activities, including coral transplantation and educational presentations.
The resort has also recently introduced yoga classes at the yoga pavilion located near the jetty. With gorgeous views of the sun rising over the Indian Ocean, guests can practice their Sun Salutation poses with renewed inspiration.
Those looking for seclusion will find lazy afternoons being lulled to bliss to the sound of ocean waves at the award-winning Angsana Spa. With 12 spa treatment rooms, including nine spa pavilions with outdoor showers, Angsana Velavaru Spa’s blend of treatments are based on the use of natural ingredients such as native flowers and fruits. Angsana Spa’s Asian therapists undergo professional training at Banyan Tree Spa Academies located in Phuket and Bangkok, Thailand; and Lijiang, China; ensuring consistently high levels of service.
Spacious Villas
The 60,000-square metre island features 79 spacious villas with direct beach frontage that cater for couples, families and friends. Each villa has a private garden, indoor and outdoor showers with selected villas featuring either a private jet-pool or plunge pool.
Maldivian Cuisine
Angsana Velavaru offers guests a superb initiation into Maldivian cuisine. Funa is a lively seafood grill and restaurant, which distils the essence of Maldivian ingredients with a gourmet touch. Located over the lagoon, Funa offers guests an over-water dining experience, with front row views of the crystal clear waters. Kaani is a meeting point of cultural cuisines served throughout the day, starting with a full Western breakfast buffet, continuing with numerous lunch options, and ending with an abundance of European dishes with an Asian twist for dinner. At Kuredhi bar, guests enjoy beachside views as they enjoy a selection of cocktails and snacks from the international menu.
Customised cooking classes give guests a chance to capture Maldivian culinary culture and recreate that experience in their own homes. Dishes might make use of fresh fish caught on night fishing expeditions; a minimum of two guests are needed.
