The 2008 Historic Hotels of America directory is available and offers new features to help travelers choose the hotel that best suits their needs and expectations.

“Historic Hotels of America showcases some of this country’s greatest travel destinations – full of the hospitality and amenities modern travelers require, while offering travelers a sense of place, authenticity and diversity in experiences,” says Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. “We constantly seek ways for our directory to be a more useful tool in travel planning. This year, we embarked on a partnership with the Preferred Hotel Group, a global leader in the hotel industry. We know this new relationship will offer new and exciting opportunities for travelers who seek the finest in historic accommodations.”

This year’s guide includes classifiers, icons and identifiers to help travelers select the ideal hotel. Identifiers describe the type of hotel (inn, hotel or resort) as well as the style of service (charming, classic or luxurious) and whether the hotel was originally built as a hotel or if it has been converted from its original use. Icons added in 2008 include one to identify the hotel’s décor (traditional, contemporary or blended) and one indicating food and beverage services available at the hotel. Additional icons showcase the historic charm and character unique to Historic Hotels of America members.

The 2008 directory also highlights fun facts or interesting tidbits about each hotel, ranging from famous guests and architectural features to one-of-a kind amenities and traditions. Here is a sampling:

* Author Louis L’Amour found the atmosphere so inspirational at The Strater Hotel in Durango, Colo., that he frequently booked rooms 222 and 223 to work on his western novels.
* The distinctive color and architecture of the Don CeSar Beach Resort, A Loews Hotel in St. Pete Beach, Fla., have made it a longtime point of reference on maritime charts.
* Jekyll Island Club Hotel in Jekyll Island, Ga., was the site of the first transcontinental telephone call placed by AT&T president Theodore Vail on January 25, 1915.
* Tennessee Williams finished writing a “Streetcar Named Desire” and John James Audubon produced a portion of his “Birds of America” series while in residence at the Hotel Maison de Ville and the Audubon Cottages in New Orleans.
* Babe Ruth’s golf locker can be seen at the golf resort at the Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, N.H.
* Charles Pfister’s art collection at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee remains the world’s largest hotel collection of Victorian art.

The directory features all 211 members of Historic Hotels of America each with two full-color images. In addition, each entry provides travelers with a brief description and history of the hotel, rates, a three-page fold-out national map (following page 264) and an easy-to-read reference chart of guest room and public space amenities as well as meeting room facilities (see page 225). Those wanting even more information can visit the Historic Hotels of America website for additional details about each hotel at www.historichotels.org.

As a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Historic Hotels of America serves to promote these hotels which are welcoming guests daily. It also raises awareness of what can be lost in communities if these hotels are not restored. The 2008 directory features the endangered “Historic Route 66 Motels” from Ill., to Calif. Affectionately called “The Mother Road,” Route 66 is known for quirky roadside attractions and unique mom-and-pop motels, constructed between the late 1920s and the late 1950s and often clad in neon. In recent years, Route 66 motels in hot real-estate markets have been torn down at record rates, while in cold real-estate markets, motels languish and are being reclaimed by the forces of nature (see page 252). Also featured are the Madison Lenox Hotel in Detroit which was demolished in 2005 and the Mapes Hotel in Reno, Nev., which was demolished in 2000 (see page 253).

Through international marketing alliances, Historic Hotels of America showcases Historic Hotels of Europe and Historic Hotels of Mexico in a five-page travel section. Historic Hotels of Europe is a federation of 17 European hotel associations in 17 countries and Historic Hotels of Mexico is an association of hotels and restaurants located in buildings of historical significance including haciendas, palaces, monasteries, convents, fortresses, country estates and more (see page 255).

To receive a copy of the 264-page Historic Hotels of America directory, send a $5.00 check or money order to HHA/Preferred Hotel Group, 38999 Eagle Way, Chicago, IL 60678-1389. Or, request a directory online at www.historichotels.org.
