This is a press release selected by our editorial committee and published online for free on 2008-05-23

Renowned for its distinctive in-house training and development programmes, Banyan Tree Spa pioneers the tropical garden spa concept with a holistic focus on spiritual, mental and physical harmony. To formalise its unique school of thought and maintain its leadership position in the spa industry, the Banyan Tree Spa Academy was first established in Phuket, Thailand in 2001 to develop unique signature techniques, treatment recipes and training philosophy.

In November 2006, an urban training centre, the Banyan Tree Thai Massage School in Bangkok, Thailand, was established to further identify recruits and train students in the art of Thai Massage. Banyan Tree Spa Lijiang Academy in China was opened in March 2007 to train dedicated Chinese spa therapists for our Spas in China. These steady expansions enable Banyan Tree Spa and Angsana Spa to further identify and train qualified therapists to meet the demands of our rapid worldwide expansion.

Mr. Ravi Chandran, Managing Director of Spa Operations, Banyan Tree Spas and Angsana Spas, says, “As the largest spa operator in Asia, Banyan Tree can attribute its success to the continued management, training and quality of our therapists. The Banyan Tree Spa Academy in Phuket was a world-first for a resort, in achieving a fully trained, talented therapist base that helped us to enter new markets and grow from one Banyan Tree Spa in 1994 to more than 65 Banyan Tree and Angsana Spas today.”

In-House Training Programmes
The training programme encompasses all areas of spa therapy, including knowledge of the human anatomy and important pressure points, modern and traditional massage techniques, variation of body weight for different techniques, knowledge of skin epidermis and facial applications, beauty treatments, properties of different herbs and spices, preparation of spa ingredients, setting up of treatment rooms and spa pavilions, and standard greetings.

Fast Track Programmes
Besides the training of therapists, outstanding therapists are identified to undergo further training with our unique Therapist Fast Track Programme, where they are groomed to move up the ranks to Senior Therapists, Management Trainee Programmes, where potential leaders are identified and trained to take on management roles within two years. Banyan Tree Spa emphasises on the career paths on all therapists and ensures that their career and personal development goals are fulfilled through continuous training and grooming.

Therapists Selection Criteria
In line with Banyan Tree Spa’s philosophy, emphasis is placed on selecting therapists with the intuitive touch and skills. Attitude and sensitivity are key criteria in selecting Banyan Tree Spa therapists who are recruited locally, from Thai and Chinese provinces. Other key criteria include enthusiasm and keen interest to develop their potential with the company.

Accreditations
The Banyan Tree Spa Academy Phuket is accredited and licensed by Thailand’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Public Health. The Banyan Tree Thai Massage School Bangkok received certification from Thailand’s Ministry of Education in January 2007.
