The Selfridges group, which includes 18 department stores in the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands, has been bought from the Weston family by the Thai Central group and Austrian property group Signa for £4 billion in December 2021.

The new owners announced that as part of the renovation of the most iconic store, located on Oxford Street, part of the space would be dedicated to creating a luxury hotel.

Empty since 2008 and the closure of the Selfridges Hotel, the building will undergo a heavy renovation to offer luxury rooms and apartments.

"The addition of a hotel and luxury apartments to the Selfridges flagship store will provide significant value-add potential for the brand," said Dieter Berninghaus, executive chairman of Signa.

Selfridges was founded in 1908 by Harry Gordon Selfridge. Popular with Middle Eastern tourists who traditionally flock to its Oxford Street store in the summer, as well as its other locations in Manchester, opened in 1998, and Birmingham, opened in 2003, the brand was acquired by Canadian businessman Galen Weston for nearly £600 million in 2003 and has since expanded into other department store chains, including Ireland and the Netherlands.
