Hotelier receives Living Reef Award in travel and tourism business category
Outrigger Hotels & Resorts received top honors for its commitment to the marine environment in the travel and tourism business category of the 3rd Annual Hawaii’s Living Reef Program Awards. Sponsored by the Coral Reef Outreach Network, the award recognized Outrigger’s responsible stewardship of sensitive shoreline areas, and its ongoing collaborations with various government agencies and nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving Hawaii’s environment.
The award was presented to the hotelier at a special ceremony held on September 21, 2007, during which Outrigger was commended for its support of multiple public education efforts about the environment, even though the environment per se is not part of the company’s core business. “We are tremendously honored to receive this recognition,” said Kimberly Agas, vice president of operations for Outrigger’s three beachfront hotels in Hawaii. “Our company was founded here in Hawaii 60 years ago. Caring for our home -- our lands, our waters, our people and our cultures -- is a large part of our corporate value system.”
The award, a crystal bowl, was created and sponsored by Tiffany & Co. Other nominees in the Travel and Tourism Business category were Atlantis Submarines and the Maui Ocean Center.
Outrigger has also been recognized by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration for the hotel’s support of NOAA’s science and stewardship efforts, and the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary for its collaborative efforts with NOAA’s Pacific Island Region. Earlier this year, Outrigger and NOAA entered into a groundbreaking agreement to expand public awareness and education about Hawaii’s fragile marine environment.
The Coral Reef Outreach Network is a collaboration of more than 40 state, federal and non-governmental outreach providers. The organization serves to raise general public awareness of the importance and interconnectedness of the coral reef ecosystem to Hawaii.
