On board, they will share insights into ocean health, Hawaiian legends and wildlife such as the glorious whales and dolphins that visit Lanai waters, while underwater the team will highlight the various species of vibrant marine life below the waves. Each tour includes lunch and a selection of beverages. (Snorkel, March 17, 19 and 20; and Whale Watch, March 18)
In addition, special group fishing and scuba charters on Lanai I, a 50 foot (15 metre) catamaran, will be offered on Thursday, March 20 and Saturday, March 22 respectively. Each excursion is open for up to six guests over 12 years of age and includes lunch, light refreshments and all equipment. Scuba charter open to guests with SCUBA certification.
Guests will also have the opportunity to learn about the important research being done in Hulopoe Bay.
Four Seasons Resort Lanai supports Elizabeth Madin, Associate Professor at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, an institute within the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa on Oahu, and Zackery Rago, field campaign leader and PhD student, as they conduct research on the island. Their project focuses on the interaction of predators and prey inside Marine Protected Areas (MPA) such as Lanai’s Hulopoe Bay. Guests can visit the site and even participate in the experiment at the beach.
Zack was also a cast member in the film Chasing Coral, a Sundance award-winner, now streaming on Netflix. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why corals are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. This film is the product of 500+ hours of underwater footage, coral bleaching submissions from volunteers in 30 countries, and support from more than 500 people in various locations around the world.
The film will be shown at Hale Keaka (house of pictures in Hawaiian), March 19 at 6:00 pm, complimentary to all viewers. Lanai’s historical and beautifully restored cinema featuring two 91-seat theatres, outfitted with state-of-the-art digital projection and sound systems.
The island’s only theatre was commissioned in 1926 by James Dole to entertain the plantation workers and families that resided on the island. For more than 70 years, it served as a gathering place where the community enjoyed hundreds of films, live plays and musical performances, reopening in 2015 following a full restoration.
Finally, the team from the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology will host a series of tide pool walks at Hulopoe Beach, talk story sessions in the Lower Lobby and host evening presentations discussing their healthy reef research and more.
