About Raphael’s The Marriage of The Virgin
Raphael’s The Marriage of the Virgin (170 x 118 cm), painted in 1504 for the church of San Francesco in Città di Castello, has been housed in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan since 1805. Signed "Raphael Urbinas" and dated MDIII, the piece marks Raphael’s artistic maturity. Inspired by Perugino’s altarpiece of the same subject (now in Caen), Raphael’s composition mirrors its predecessor but introduces unique refinements. The painting depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph, with a priest at the center joining their hands. Women stand to Mary’s left, while men stand to Joseph’s right; one man is seen breaking a branch, symbolizing his missed opportunity with Mary, while Joseph’s branch blossoms. In the background, a sixteen-sided temple serves as the work’s optical focal point, with Raphael’s signature placed above the main arch. Infrared reflectography reveals precise lines defining the temple’s perspective, reflecting techniques derived from Piero della Francesca’s De Prospectiva Pingendi. The calculated arrangement of figures and harmonious proportions embody Raphael’s belief in idealized beauty as a guiding principle for how nature “should” appear.
