SapoCycle: the NGO that gives a second life to discarded luxury hotel soaps in France

Sustainable development is considered one of the most essential keys to business success in the 21st century.

The hotel industry is no exception.

For three years in France, and more than six in Switzerland, SapoCycle has been giving a second life to luxury soaps, creating jobs for the most fragile and restoring dignity to the excluded.

What is SapoCycle's Bubbles Saving Lives programme?

Environmentally conscious hotels collect used hard soaps that are discarded after each guest visit.

The soaps are transformed into new bars of soap in an ESAT Adapei Papillons Blancs d'Alsace workshop in Colmar, which enables people with disabilities to work. The recycled soaps are then distributed to associations committed to the hygiene of the most disadvantaged, refugee camps and families in need.

This is a fantastic programme for high-end hotels that still offer their guests small, high-quality soaps and are required to throw them away when their guests leave; it is a tool to assist them in their sustainable approach.

After the guests have left, the cleaning teams collect the soaps in separate containers which then are sent to the Adapei Papillons Blancs workshop.

100% clean, 100% fair, 100% eco-friendly

What is great about the Bubbles Saving Lives program is that it is accessible to everyone and values all those who contribute. In a society in search of immediate effective solutions, SapoCycle fits naturally into its time - that of the circular economy, and that of the social and solidarity economy - and finds its place because its initiative responds to all expectations in terms of values and allows the companies that support it to communicate by actively participating on 3 essential angles: social, ecological and humanitarian.

Participating in the program fosters employees' self-esteem and offers a great opportunity to communicate with values that are accessible to all.

The management of hotel waste ultimately allows us to give back self-esteem to all those who are deprived of it for financial reasons, through access to hygiene products. Access to permanent and satisfying work for adults with disabilities is the third link in a virtuous circle.

It is estimated that in France about 700 tons of used hotel soaps are thrown away every year. Bubbles Saving Lives is also a relief for hotel cleaning teams, who are often annoyed by the waste, and it helps to promote good hotel management. It is a real communication lever for luxury hotels, which can show their small gestures for the planet.

The unique hotel soap transformation program created by SapoCycle also saves huge amounts of CO2: a study by the University of Basel (Switzerland) has shown that recycling soaps costs 10 times less CO2 than traditional waste management.
Bubbles saving Lives is simple and transparent.

Dorothée Schiesser, the founder of SapoCycle, says "Our program covers the essential elements of SER (Social and Environmental Responsibility): balancing ecological, social and humanitarian objectives with financial sustainability. We have embraced the core values of social enterprise: heart before money and performance indicators that go beyond numbers. "

Since the start of the program in France, more than 7,400 kilos of small used hotel soaps have been collected by SapoCycle France.

More than 50,000 beautiful soaps have been redistributed free of charge to associations that work to improve the sanitary conditions of families in need (Restos du Cœur, Caritas, Aléos).

Who wouldn't be interested in giving a second life to discarded hotel soaps and showing their customers that they care about the environment?

About SapoCycle

SapoCycle is a non-profit association active in France and Switzerland that gives a second life to soap by collecting used hotel soaps. These are then recycled by people with disabilities. The soaps are sorted, cleaned, crushed and heated, and then undergo bacteriological tests that confirm the absence of germs and bacteria. New soaps are made, which are then distributed to people in need. The soaps improve the hygiene situation on site and thus make a decisive contribution to the containment of communicable diseases.
