The Rt Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Westminster Councillor Ruth Bush and other VIPs were invited to witness the topping out of the first core of the building and a time capsule ceremony, hosted by HSH Chairman The Honourable Sir Michael Kadoorie.
Speaking at the event, Sir Michael said: “This is an exciting day for The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels. It has taken us thirty years to find the perfect location in London, one of the world’s most dynamic cities. It is our vision that The Peninsula London shall be recognised as one of the finest hotels in the world. We hope it will become a much-loved part of the local community as well as a home away from home for visitors to London.”
HSH Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mr Clement Kwok added: “We are delighted to achieve this significant milestone for The Peninsula London, the next step in our journey towards completion in 2021. Our group’s philosophy is to focus on owning and operating a small number of the highest quality hotels with the objective of creating long term value. The Peninsula London project represents a significant investment for our group and we believe it will become a major landmark in Belgravia.”
The project site for The Peninsula London is in a spectacular location overlooking Hyde Park Corner and the Wellington Arch and will comprise a 189-room hotel and 26 luxury residential apartments, with opening currently scheduled for 2021.
The Peninsula London hotel has been designed by UK-based Hopkins, with the interiors designed by Peter Marino Architect. Food and beverage outlets are being designed by Archer Humphryes and Henry Leung. Engineering services are provided by WSP and Cundall. The Development and Project Manager is Prime Development, and construction management is being handled by Sir Robert McAlpine. The concrete frame contractor is Byrne Brothers.
