  • Meliá Hotels International signs three new hotels in APAC, and now has over 50 properties under operation or due-to-open in Asia Pacific, proving its commitment to growth in the region
  • Mr. Gabriel Escarrer met with local representatives of UNICEF in Indonesia to strengthen their continued partnership and show support for earthquake victims in Sulawesi
Mr. Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Meliá Hotels International, the group’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. André Gerondeau, and the Regional Vice President Asia Pacific, Mr. Bernardo Cabot, recently ended their Asia Pacific tour, during which they visited China, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.

During Mr. Escarrer’s trip, the company signed three new hotels: Meliá Hoi An and Meliá Phu Quoc in Vietnam, and Meliá Phuket Karon in Thailand. These new properties take Meliá Hotels International’s portfolio in Asia Pacific to 51 hotels, all scheduled to be fully operational by 2022. The company has seen spectacular growth over the last 6 years, growing from 6 operating hotels to 51 hotels in operation and pipeline.

Since opening Meliá Bali in 1985, its first international hotel, Meliá has had a very strong focus on Asia, where it now has an extensive portfolio in 7 countries. In the medium term, the company expects that the growth of its Gran Meliá Hotels & Resorts, Meliá Hotels & Resorts, Sol by Meliá and INNSIDE by Meliá brands in the region may contribute to financial results and importance similar to that of their well-established and renowned Caribbean hotels. Furthermore, the company would like to bring other brands like ME by Meliá and Paradisus by Meliá from its portfolio to key destinations in APAC region. Over the last decade, the company has also focused heavily on China, a huge market in which it continues to make firm and consistent progress in increasing its hotel portfolio.

Diversification and growth

Meliá has had a corporate presence in China for more than 10 years and began operating the Meliá Jinan hotel in 2014. The company currently has 3 additional hotels open in Shanghai, Xi’an and Zhengzhou, and another 7 in the pipeline under three of its most prestigious brands: Gran Meliá, Meliá and INNSIDE by Meliá.

Meliá's commitment to China is based on respect for the rich Chinese culture and the integration of its brands and values with the culture, exemplified by the extensive "PengYou by Meliá" programme which adapts services to the expectations of Chinese travellers in hotels all over the world. Key to their success in China has been strong relationships with owning groups, such as Greenland. In addition, Meliá also has partnerships with major players in the travel and tourism industry, such as Ctrip, the leading online tour operator and Air China and China Eastern Airlines.

In Indonesia, the country where Meliá opened its first hotel in Asia, the group is already among the top 3 international hotel chains, with 16 hotels either open or in the process of opening (most of them resorts). The company has had strategic partnerships with Indonesian allies for decades, among them PTSAI, and remains strongly committed to a destination which is safe, exotic and immensely beautiful, making it ideal for leisure travel.

Meliá has grown particularly quickly in Vietnam, where it already had 10 hotels either open or in the pipeline, making it one of the leading international hotel companies in the country. The group first entered Vietnam with Meliá Hanoi, and soon will have three properties in Ho Chi Minh City, solidifying their presence in the main cities. In addition to the urban properties, Meliá is also focusing on the traditional leisure destinations and during this trip, the group added two new hotels, Meliá Hoi An and Meliá Phu Quoc, bringing their total footprint to 12 hotels in this exciting country, making it the second biggest market for the group in APAC.

With regards to Thailand, Meliá Hotels International already has 4 hotels under construction together with its local partner TCC-Land, the leading real estate group in Thailand. Understanding Thailand’s strong potential in leisure and business travel, during the trip the group added Meliá Phuket Karon to the portfolio. After this addition, Meliá Hotels International will have 6 hotels in the country, two of them in Phuket, one of the most coveted destinations in the region.

For Mr. Gabriel Escarrer, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, "as the third largest hotel company in Europe, we at Meliá we are very comfortable with the rate of our growth in Asia Pacific, in line with the dynamic nature of the region itself and look forward to continuing our strong momentum and commitment to Asia Pacific."

Meeting with UNICEF in Indonesia

During the CEO’s visit to Indonesia, he also met with UNICEF in Indonesia to further strengthen their 10-year relationship. Both parties have the respective concern and willingness to promote child protection and child rights, especially in Indonesia, where many children have been affected by the Sulawesi earthquake.

Both parties are eager to move forward on this commitment, the first step is to develop a specific action plan, focusing on Jakarta, the central capital of Indonesia, and Makassar, the closest city affected by the Sulawesi earthquake. For more than 34 years, the luxurious hospitality group has had a presence in Indonesia and it has become a second home for the family run company. Therefore, MHI is committed to give their best support in working with UNICEF, especially in this region.
