PICTO, the leading European photo lab created in 1950 in Paris by Pierre Gassmann, selected Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris for an exhibition in honor of its 60th anniversary.
Since it reopened last October, Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris has pursued its goal of being a full-fledged member of the cultural and artistic life of Paris through a number of events and initiatives (Basquiat exhibition, Vik Muniz, AES+F, Melvin Sokolsky, commissions to contemporary artists, private collection and Le Royal Monceau Photography Competition), and by fostering at the luxury hotel an ambiance of exchange and open dialogue among artists in tune with the world at large.
Starting September 15, 2011, Le Royal Monceau – Raffles Paris is presenting a new exhibition in its gallery, the Art District, showcasing the collaboration that began in 1950 between some of the greatest photographers of our time and PICTO.
This exhibition, which follows the recent celebrations of PICTO’s 60th anniversary inaugurated in the summer of 2010 with an exhibition at the Rencontres d’Arles—is a historical overview of the past 60 years. It explores two aspects of photography: the evolution of printing processes and the multiple artistic styles that have marked recent decades.
This unique show consists of 43 works selected by Hervé Mikaeloff, curator at Le Royal Monceau. In the lobby gallery, the public can discover another facet of PICTO’s commitment to photographers with the display of images by Isabelle Chapuis, winner of the Prix PICTO for young fashion photography in 2010.

About PICTO
Pierre Gassmann created PICTO, the leading European photo lab, in Paris in 1950. He was devoted to images and was the preferred printer for the greatest photographers in pre- and post-war years. Forty years of growth ensued, orchestrated by Edy Gassmann (now deceased) and his wife Paulette. Their son Philippe has been running the company for the last ten years. The lab’s services are now accessible to photographers and advertisers via the website: http://online.picto.fr/. PICTO printed all the photographs for the Royal Monceau’s private collection, displayed in the hotel rooms.
