The Spanish company which owns the central London hotel has confirmed that this morning there was a fire in the roof of the building, controlled but not extinguished yet, causing no personal injuries. Pending a final assessment, the extent of the material damage is already unknown.
Meliá Hotels International is grateful to the London Fire Brigade for their diligence and responsibility in extinguishing the fire, preventing it spreading to the rest of the building and, above all, avoiding injuries.
The building work, with the full-risk insurance coverage, will be restarted as soon as possible. This Foster & Partners project is currently under construction and occupying Marconi House (former headquarters of the BBC), one of the most distinctive buildings on The Strand.
The hotel will be named ME London, and is the second hotel for the Spanish company in London, where it has already operated the Meliá White House in Regent's Park for over a decade, making it one of the most successful hotels in the British capital. The ME by Meliá brand has properties in Madrid, Barcelona, Cancun, Los Cabos, and will open two new hotels in London and Vienna.
