Tom Avery, Charley Boorman, Patrick Woodhead and others to host season of ‘SLOW LIFE’ dinners from April 2011
Why are emperor penguins moving south? What will happen to Antarctica in 2041? How did a fossil-fueled car fly from London to Timbuktu? In what ways are the indigenous people of the planet going to be affected by climate change? 30,000 species become extinct each year, what can we humans do to reverse that?
These questions and many more will be answered by the people who know best when Six Senses’ flagship Soneva resorts – Soneva Fushi and Soneva Gili in the Maldives and Soneva Kiri in Koh Kood, Thailand – hold a series of ‘Exploratory Talkers’ Tables’ with some of the world’s foremost adventurers, the Darwins and Shackletons of today.
Tom Avery (April), Patrick Woodhead (June), Olly Steeds (2011 Date TBC), Neil Laughton (October), David Hempleman-Adams (November) and Charley Boorman (2011 date TBC) will be some of the explorers discussing the planet’s most pressing climate change issues whilst bringing to life their fascinating tales and photography.
Each explorer’s talk will be followed by a ‘SLOW LIFE’ gourmet dinner (the Six Senses acronym for its pioneering eco philosophy is Sustainable, Local, Organic, Wholesome, Learning, Inspiring, Fun, Experiences) featuring ingredients grown organically or caught by rod and line within a few miles of each resort.
Arctic explorer Tom Avery starts the season this April
The series of dinners begins on Thursday 14th April with British explorer Tom Avery, who will tell guests about his record-breaking exploits which include scaling previously unclimbed peaks in the Himalayas and marathon journeys to the North and South Poles – he is one of only 41 people in history to have reached both poles on foot. He will also relate his first hand observation of the melting white icecaps of Antarctic which, most scientists agree, will lead to rising sea levels.
To emphasize the poignancy of his message the talk and dinner will be held on Soneva Fushi’s own private sandbank in the middle of the ocean. Sadly, if sea levels rise as anticipated the sandbank may not be with us for long. Tom’s dinner will include, among many mouthwatering dishes, mushrooms grown in Soneva Fushi’s very own mushroom hut.
The schedule of dinners
Each Soneva will hold a minimum of 3 ‘Exploratory Talkers Tables’ each. For now the plan is as follows:
Soneva Fushi - Tom Avery – 14th April 2011; Patrick Woodhead – 22nd June 2011
Soneva Gili - Olly Steeds - 2011 date tbc; Neil Laughton – 15th October 2011
Soneva Kiri - David Hempleman-Adams – 2nd November 2011; Charley Boorman at Soneva Kiri – date TBC
