Four years after The Amazing Race first careened through Vietnam, one of the country’s premier hotels has made a version of the scavenger-hunt-style competition a mainstay activity.
Launched last month, Sheraton Nha Trang Hotel & Spa’s adaptation — called “Nha Trang Adventure” — pivots around the same premise that has made the reality game show so popular: be a member of the first twosome to complete a list of tasks and win the event.
“I think anyone who enjoys watching The Amazing Race wonders what it would be like to actually participate, too,” said Debbie Chee, Sheraton Nha Trang’s director of sales and marketing. “Now guests of our hotel can get a real taste of what the experience is like, and in a place chock full of exhilarating pursuits.”
Like the program that inspired it, “Nha Trang Adventure” pits pairs against one another in a challenge that requires teamwork, a sense of urgency and clue decoding prowess to be successful.
The setting is a town with some of Vietnam’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Po Nagar Tower, Yersin Museum and Oceanographic Institute.
“Initial feedback is that the ‘Adventure’ is not only fun, it’s educational,” said Chee.
“Players get to take in the destination at the same time they are taking on their friends or colleagues in a game”.
“From that standpoint, it’s the perfect team-building exercise, and one that we feel will be as attractive to the MICE segment as our Cooking Competition.”
In the sixth-floor, purpose-built cooking school, the first of its kind in a hotel in Vietnam, Sheraton Nha Trang’s Cooking Competition is aimed at wannabe chefs who must turn a batch of ingredients into an appetizer and main dish in the fastest amount of time without foregoing quality.
Sheraton Nha Trang’s executive chef takes into consideration taste, presentation and timing in determining the winning squad.
The 284-room, 30-story property became the first international upscale hotel on the beach in Vietnam when it debuted in March. It overlooks a seven-kilometre-long stretch of golden sand, one of the world’s most beautiful bays (www.world-bays.com) and a town steeped in history and culture.
A city-center location, signature Link@Sheraton experienced with Microsoft, a business centre, nine function rooms — including Altitude, on the 28th floor and with panoramic views of the East Sea — and 10 classes of accommodation make the hotel a magnet for businesses and conferences.
The one-hour Cooking Competition is available to groups of 20, costs $24++ per person and must be booked at least two days in advance.
The four-hour “Nha Trang Adventure” requires a sign-up of at least 20 players and is priced at $25++ per person.
Until Nov. 30, Sheraton Nha Trang is offering a Full-Day Meeting Package at US$ 168++ per person per day, inclusive of twin-sharing accommodation in a Deluxe Ocean View Room, daily buffet breakfast, one-way airport transfer from the airport, one-hour welcome cocktail with canapés upon arrival, two coffee breaks and one lunch per day, 24 hours of in-room Internet access and 10-percent discounts on body treatments at Shine Spa.
