Indochina's Victoria Hotels & Resorts is mounting a ‘Green Day’ clean-up of beauty spots around its six resorts and spas in Vietnam and Cambodia. This year it will be on September 11th, 2010 from Vietnam’s north-west highlands and coastline to the Mekong Delta region and the city of Siem Reap. The environmental campaign is held annually at all its properties and welcomes volunteers from hotel guests and local communities to participate in this meaningful effort to promote “green” awareness.
Victoria Sapa Resort & Spa up in the mountainous region will organise a clean-up around Sapa lake, the stadium, the central square and tourist zones around the city such as Ta Van, Lao Chai and Cat Cat. Victoria staff will work with the help of about 1500 local schoolchildren, who are mostly from minority hill tribes, along with local authorities and partners. Cooperation with the local environmental department will be organised to dispose the garbage collected.
Along Vietnam’s coastline, Victoria Phan Thiet Beach Resort & Spa will divide the clean-up into two areas, the main road and the beach. The resort expects around 350 participants including the pupils of Phu Hai School, Youth & Woman Organization of Phu Hai Ward, and 150 Victoria staff. Victoria Hoi An Beach Resort & Spa will be cleaning along the streets, river and beach around the UNESCO World Heritage town with the help of Hoi An Eco Tour.
In the Mekong Delta, with the help of local students from Thu Khoa Huan Secondary School, local community members and volunteers, Victoria Chau Doc Hotel is organizing a clean-up of Sam Mountain, famous for its pagodas set in caves and splendid views over Chau Doc and Cambodia. 120 km away, Victoria Can Tho Resort will be picking up garbage from the river with participation from hotel staff as well as Can Tho University and Can Tho Tourism College.
For the second time, Victoria Angkor Spa & Resort will organise a clean-up along the river of Siem Reap as the temple compounds are already very well kept by the local authorities. Thus, the hotel wishes to promote environmental consciousness among the local community.
Recognized for its continuous efforts in promoting environmental preservation, Victoria Chau Doc Hotel was awarded the Certificate of "Outstanding contribution to the Mekong Delta sustainable development" by MDEC Kien Giang earlier this year.
Oxen Racing in the Mekong Delta with Victoria Chau Doc Hotel
The 19th annual Oxen races will take place on October 5th at the temple courtyard of Ta Miet, in Tri Ton district, An Giang province. In celebration of this unique festival, Victoria Chau Doc Hotel is featuring a fun-filled ‘Oxen Race Day’ package from October 4th to 6th. The Oxen race originated as a special sporting event in the Seven Mountains (An Giang), and has always been included in the celebration of the Khmer Dolta festival.
Highlighting this festival are the spectacular and frequently hilarious oxen races. Each race consists of two competitors driving a pair of cattle, whipping them with a rattan switch or a piece of wood to make them race ahead on parcels of 120m long muddy and slippery track field. Nearly 70 pairs of oxen have been registered so far, and the annual event is always a major attraction among numerous domestic and foreign tourists.
The Oxen Race Package offered by Victoria Chau Doc Hotel features three days two nights stay at the grand colonial style hotel right along side the banks for the Bassac River. It is priced at US$224 per person on a twin-share basis, and includes excursions to the Sacred Sam Mountain, a boating tour to the floating fish farm and unique Cham village. In addition, guests will also be treated with a 45-minute Vietnamese massage, an upgrade to Deluxe room upon availability, a special Victoria gift, and lastly a welcome drink & fruit basket upon arrival.
The Dolta Festival was celebrated traditionally among the Khmer natives of the Mekong Delta region in An Giang province. Celebrating the planting of the autumn-winter crops, it features colorful parades, family dinners, cultural shows, dancing – and the famous oxen races. The race is open to contestants from An Giang Province but also from other nearby provinces, and even from localities in Cambodia's Takeo Province. Nowadays, the Dolta Festival is widely celebrated by all ethnicity groups living in this region.
