Maui Hotel's Ongoing Environmental Efforts Recognized by State of Hawaii

The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui hotel is an environmental leader on the island because of the passion and dedication of the hotel's Green Team. Over the past nine years, the team has successfully implemented more than 50 environmentally friendly initiatives including: a Recycling Cents program donating money from recyclables to local charities raising over $20,000; a laundry water recycling system which has saved over 50 million gallons of water since installation in 2005; automatic eco-MODE thermostats reducing air conditioning costs by 20%; biodegradable food containers; rock salt treatment systems in pools; and a focus on sustainable cuisine served in each of this Maui resort's distinctive restaurants.

All the efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Fairmont Kea Lani recently received the Hawaii Green Business Award. Lt. Governor James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr. presented statues made from recycled glass to The Fairmont Kea Lani along with eight other hotels for their outstanding efforts in sustainable and environmental practices ranging from pollution prevention to water and energy conservation, recycling, and environmental purchasing. "Protecting Hawaii's natural environment and precious resources is a shared responsibility," said Lt. Governor Aiona. "Hawaii businesses recognize that a healthy environment is critical to the well-being of our state and our economy."

The Fairmont Kea Lani recently launched an Eco-Learning Package for guests interested in "malama 'aina" (taking care of the land). Guests have the opportunity to: help preserve Haleakala National Park while learning about the history of this spectacular volcano; work on an organic farm in a rainforest; remove invasive species near some of Maui's last sand dunes; or save Hawaii's archeological sites by planting native species.

This unique Maui hotel package also includes:
-- Three night's accommodations in a one-bedroom suite
-- Hawaiian Canoe Experience
-- Cultural property tour
-- A three-course sustainable dinner for two

Packages start from $449/night. Offer valid through 12/17/2010, subject to availability. For more information on the Eco-Learning Package or any of this Maui luxury hotel's other eco-initiatives, call 800-659-4100 or www.fairmont.com/kealani.
