Charitable Group Activities Give Events Deeper Value

As planners seek ways to enhance meetings with programs that incorporate good deeds and community involvement, colleagues at Fairmont Hotels & Resorts offer a wealth of experience presenting activities that foster both teamwork and social good. With unrivalled locations and innovative events, each property's unique community is reflected in the hotel's décor, cuisine and activities. Attendees can go one step further and include the community in their programs, whether building bikes for local children or preparing meals for a homeless shelter in need.

At Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui, one high-tech group sought a team building activity that would have a positive impact in the local community as well as raise the group's environmental awareness, highlight the company's green efforts and incorporate technology into the program. The result -- a race featuring environmentally friendly cars.

Each team created two cars - the first was solar-powered and built from kits provided, while the second was made from recycled materials. The group also invited local students onto the teams, allowing for a cultural exchange between the local classes and meeting attendees from all over the world. Afterward, the group donated the cars, as well as new solar car kits and a solar classroom curriculum, to area schools so teachers can use the materials to highlight energy conservation and alternative methods of transportation plus foster creativity and innovation within the classroom.

Many Fairmont properties have been able to create memorable events that give meetings a deeper impact. At Fairmont Tremblant one group held a teambuilding activity where over 150 people planted trees on the Diable River to help prevent Blue Algae buildup on the shores. Recently a group at The Fairmont Dallas came together for an afternoon to build bunk beds for area homeless shelters and construct wall units for 25 Habitat for Humanity homes in North Texas. For a function at The Fairmont Turnberry, meeting attendees prepared 250 meals for a local homeless shelter. Due to its success, the program is now offered as part of a meetings package.

Many teambuilding activities can incorporate good deeds as well as providing recreational opportunities for attendees. At Fairmont Scottsdale the Sonoran Wildlife Discovery Program provides a Wildlife Center presenter to showcase a variety of rescued wildlife, explain their habitats and share interesting facts about the animals for groups, with a $250 fee donated directly to the Center.
