NAPOLEONIC SPLENDORS: HOTEL DU PALAIS HOSTS MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF NEW YORK’S METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART

The legendary Hotel du Palais, Napoleon III and Empress Eugenia’s summer palace on the shores of Biarritz, will play host to a select group of Members and Friends of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for five nights from June 1 to 6, 2010. This stay in the Empress’ seaside playground is part of a nine-day program entitled “Napoleonic Splendors: Palaces and Pleasures”, which was designed by Academic Arrangements Abroad, a tour operator based in New York City, in conjunction with distinguished historian and author Olivier Bernier. Mr. Bernier’s Met lecture series on France has received rave reviews, making him an excellent choice to accompany the group and offer them his unique insights.

“We are honored to welcome Mr. Bernier and his group to our hotel,” says Mr. Jean-Louis Leimbarcher, General Manager of Hotel du Palais. “Our unique history makes us such an integral part of the grandeur of the Napoleonic era and the wealth of architectural and artistic treasures of the time. We are delighted and certain that they will be as enchanted as we are with the Countess of Montijo’s former summer home.”

For more than three decades, Academic Arrangements Abroad has collaborated exclusively with leading museums, alumni associations and cultural organizations to create high-quality and memorable travel experiences for their members. They drew upon this extensive experience to create a logistically elegant itinerary, including five days of excursions in and around Biarritz, located in the heart of the picturesque Basque country. With the Hotel du Palais serving as a luxurious base of operations, the group will journey to several nearby destinations, including St. Jean de Luz to see the château and St. Jean-Baptiste church, where Louis XIV was married, and San Sebastían in the Basque country for a visit to the Chillida Foundation, where the artist’s work can be seen throughout the extensive sculpture garden. They will also travel through the foothills of the Pyrenees to the village of Pau, to discover the medieval château restored by Napoleon III, among other treasures.

From Biarritz, guests will move on to Saint-Germain-en-Laye, adding a further touch of royal splendor by staying in the pavilion where Louis XIV was born. Visits include Fontainebleau, Napoleon's favorite palace. The entire voyage will be enriched at every turn by French dining at its best.

The program rate per person is USD$9,450 with a single supplement of USD$1,385. Rate includes nine nights hotel accommodations, as per itinerary; first-class train ticket Biarritz to Paris; buffet breakfast daily, six lunches and four dinners; wine with lunches and dinners; enrichment program of lectures by Olivier Bernier; escorted sightseeing and entrance fees; gratuities to guides and drivers; airport/hotel/train station group transfers and taxes, service and porterage fees. International airfare is not included. An optional three-night prelude in Paris, staying at the Hotel du Crillon, is offered for USD$1,795 with a single supplement of USD$590.
