Philanthropy Takes No Holiday, but Benefits from Those Who Do

It's the gift that keeps on giving. To mark its 40th anniversary, Preferred Hotel Group™ set an ambitious goal for the second year of its company-wide global philanthropic initiative, The Giving Room: enlist 40 participating hotels to raise $40,000 for local charities over a four-month period this past summer. However this year's drive far exceeded that mark with 61 participants and donations totaling well over $40,000. The funds raised will benefit communities in 18 countries around the world.

"We set the bar high for The Giving Room in 2008, but it was no match for the enthusiasm and great character of our hoteliers and guests," said John Ueberroth, Chairman and CEO, Preferred Hotel Group. "This is a clear demonstration that hospitality at its best is something that is not simply contained within a hotel, but extends beyond it to impact the community in positive, tangible ways."

From May 1 through August 31, participating hotels were asked to designate one room or suite as their Giving Room. For each night the room was occupied, 10 percent of the revenue collected on the hotel's Giving Room was matched by funds from the Ueberroth Family Foundation and the total donated to the hotel's charity of choice. In its inaugural year, The Giving Room drew 17 member hotels to the cause, who together raised almost $20,000. This year's campaign reflects a tripling in participation and more than double the donations. In addition, room revenues generated by The Giving Room increased from roughly $100,000 in 2007 to nearly $200,000 in 2008.

The major beneficiary of this year's Giving Room campaign is The Hunger Project, a global project to end hunger in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The charity of choice for the 16 participating hotels of The Netherlands' Eden City Hotels, The Hunger Project received a total donation of $5,228. Of the individual hotels participating, Madrid's Wellington Hotel succeeded in raising the most funds, resulting in a $4,735 donation to the Spanish Association Against Cancer. Other designated beneficiaries span the globe and include the Irish Cancer Society, Guangzhou Foundation for Disabled Persons, and Intermon Oxfam, an organization active in more than 100 countries to overcome poverty and injustice.

The following is the list of participating members in Asia Pacific.
