China’s premier ski resort will set new standards in
mountain resort development
With numbers of skiers predicted to more than double to reach10 million by 2010, Melco China Resorts (MCR) reveals plans for their inaugural development, Sun Mountain Yabuli, set to revolutionise the country's ski resort industry and all aspects of mountain resort development.
An associate of Melco International Development Limited, Melco China Resorts is the largest operator and developer of world-class ski resorts in China. Currently transforming one existing ski area in Beijing and four existing ski areas in the North Eastern provinces of Heilongjiang and Jili, most notably Sun Mountain Yabuli, MCR is introducing international standards never seen before in China’s ski industry.
Ski resorts of this standard although highly sought after, are not currently available in China. Sun Mountain Yabuli will be the first resort to fill this need for up-market recreational activities among the country’s rapidly growing middle and upper classes and will be the destination of choice for those searching for up-market recreational activities.
Located 2.5 hours south-east of Harbin by road or 90 minutes by train, Yabuli is a village centered mountain resort with three premium hotels under construction (two at the base of the mountain, one at the of the mountain, Sun Mountain Lodge) with a total room number of 312 including 24 luxury sky suites with sauna, outdoor hot tub and observatory due to be completed by December 2008. A 263 room condo hotel is also being developed and will be completed by December 2009.
Recently invited to be part of the coveted collection, Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), Yabuli’s Sun Mountain Lodge will be bringing a level of refinement in terms of finish, fixtures and service that is well beyond the standard available in European or North American ski resorts and more consistent with the quality of hotels expected in Asian cities.
Yabuli will lead the industry in ski technology that is currently unavailable elsewhere in the world. Some of the industry’s best snow and grooming technicians have devised a grooming system, unique to Yabuli which will allow the snow to cure for different aspect, pitch, different levels and numbers of skiers, ensuring optimum conditions for all skiers, irrespective of their experience level. This level of control over the quality of the snow is something that is unique to China and only available in a few resorts in Europe and North America.
The innovations are not restricted to improving the downhill experience; traveling back up the mountain will also be a unique experience at Yabuli. MCR will offer a heated gondola for its VIP guests and residents, a luxury feature currently available only at the most prestigious resorts in Europe. The VIP cabins will feature polished timber trim, leather seating surfaces, a mini bar, cabin lighting, and a BOSE stereo system to ensure that skiers are not only kept warm when traveling up the mountain, but also get a taste of lavishness in the process.
In addition to the luxury hotels and 5-star facilities on-site and on the slopes, a number of mountain-side resort homes for those looking to own their own piece of the beautiful surroundings of the mountain. The homes have been designed by internationally acclaimed architects and finished to premium standards and are currently available for sale.
“Our commitment is to introduce standards that did not previously exist in China’s ski industry,” commented Graham Kwan, CEO of MCR. “Our portfolio of integrated resorts and luxurious resort homes represents a status and lifestyle pinnacle that was not available in Northern China until now.”
The design of the homes entitled The Peaks, takes its cue from the pristine natural surroundings and the mountain itself. Each residence embraces open space and spectacular views. Rooted to the ground by a stone base, the resort homes rise from their surroundings in mottled gold and yellow tones. Accents of dark timber contrast their comforting hues.
“Buyers of our homes will have access to a lifestyle that allows them to escape the crowded, hectic urban city centers where they live and work,” Kwan continued. “They can relax and indulge themselves amidst pristine, natural mountain scenery. We are feeding a growing demand for superior lodging and service excellence that snow sports and other outdoor sports enthusiasts seek.”
In addition to the abundance of on-mountain and resort activities for both accomplished skiers and beginners, unique “four seasons” facilities and attractions from tennis, zip lining, boating and water sports, equestrian, biking, luxury camping, performance driving schools, culinary arts to wine programs and live entertainment will be available year-round.
