First six hotels in agreement with Scandinavian Hospitality Group to be located in Oslo, Kristiansund, Stockholm, Malmoe and ski resorts in Trysil and Hemsedal
The Marriott International (NYSE:MAR) lodging presence in Norway and Sweden will include six hotels by 2010, representing three brands, giving travelers a choice of accommodations at varying price points and offering distinctly different travel experiences. The hotels are being developed under a recently announced multiple franchise agreement with Scandinavian Hospitality Group (SHG).
Included are the following hotels representing Marriott’s upscale, deluxe Marriott and Renaissance brands and its upper moderately priced Courtyard by Marriott brand:
• 300-room Oslo International Airport Marriott Hotel, Norway (2009)
• 120-room Renaissance Malmoe Hotel located in the heart of Malmoe, Sweden (2009)
• 280-unit Trysill Marriott Ski Resort, Norway (2010)
• 310-unit Hemsedal Marriott Resort, Norway (2010)
Earlier, Marriott and SHG announced the following hotels:
• 272-room Courtyard by Marriott Stockholm-Kungsholmen located in the western suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden (2009)
• 155-room Courtyard by Marriott Kristiansund International Airport, Norway (2009)
Marriott’s agreement with SHG is expected to result in the opening of an initial 15 hotels under the Marriott, Renaissance, Courtyard and Marriott Executive Apartments brand for extended stay travelers in Sweden, Norway and Finland through 2013. Marriott’s first hotel in Scandinavia is the Copenhagen Marriott that opened in 2001.
“We are very happy to be expanding in this region, and the hotels announced today, together with the Courtyards announced previously, will give us a major presence with our full-service, deluxe brands,” said Gitta Brueckmann, regional vice president of sales and marketing for Marriott International in Continental Europe. “We look forward to the partnership with SHG and know that our brands, operated by SHG, will serve their markets well.”
“The three Marriott hotels and resorts in Norway and the Renaissance in Stockholm, together with the two Courtyard hotels already announced, give us three of the strongest brands in the lodging industry, each serving different kinds of travelers,” said Harald Jacobsen, SHG’s president. “The power of these very popular global brands will be good for Scandinavia, as will our close working relationship with Marriott International and its 3,000 hotels worldwide.”
