Two Shanghai hotels, the historic Donghu Hotel and the Central Hotel, have both joined WORLDHOTELS as First Class Collection members.
The Donghu Hotel Shanghai is a boutique style hotel dating back to the 1920s when it was the private residence of Shanghai’s prominent tycoon Du Yuesheng. It is superbly located in the attractive French Concession district of Shanghai, within easy walking distance of the trendy Xintiandi restaurant and nightlife district.
The hotel evokes the historic era of Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s in both its lobby and restaurants, as well as the 310 rooms, including seven different types of residential villas. Rooms nonetheless have all modern facilities including attractive marble bathrooms which separate tub and shower. Its recreational facilities include a beauty salon, gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, tennis court, disco, billiards room and sauna.
Business facilities incorporate a multi-function hall and a business centre. The hotel has three Chinese restaurants and a Korean restaurant serving a variety of Sichuan, Cantonese and Asian cuisine.
Located in a separate building to the main hotel are a number of elegant 1920s private dining rooms with all the original furnishings and antique fittings in tact, with names like Grand Hall, Sassoon Room and Wing On Hall.
A cigar bar features an old gramophone player, art deco chairs and stained glass windows and a wonderful gold brocaded ceiling.
The hotel was converted from a series of properties built in the 1920s, 30s and 40s that were over the years occupied variously by Du Yuesheng, the Sino-France Bank, the Communications Bank, the U.S. Consulate-General and a Soviet Union commercial office.
Combining modern art and an elegant classical style, the 319 room Central Hotel Shanghai towers over the heart of the city's shopping and business district adjacent to Century Square on Nanjing Road.
Built in 1999, the new hotel's facilities include elegant meeting and banqueting rooms, a business centre, mini-supermarket, book store, Chinese silk shop, fashion boutique and several restaurants and bars including the Wang Bao He Chinese restaurant, the Moon River Music Bar and a Cigar Bar.
Recreational amenities range from a fitness and aerobics centre to a fully equipped beauty salon and sauna, billiards, a chess and table-tennis court, karaoke lounge and discotheque.
From every September to following January, the hotel is famed for hosting Shanghai's annual Wang Bao He Crab Feast.
