The Culinary Art Competition 2011, the biggest food and hotel show in the culinary calendar was held for the 14th consecutive time at the BMICH. This prestigious event is organized by the Chef Guild of Sri Lanka and it concluded after 4 days of competitive moments. The culinary team of Hilton Colombo secured several awards, including the Best Regional Culinary Team. The total number of medals won for Hilton Colombo was 53.
Chefs from various hotels, bakeries and restaurants participated in this 4 day event. First started in 1993 and held every other year, the competition is acclaimed to be the most eagerly awaited event by culinary professionals.
Some of the outstanding awards won by Hilton Colombo are; Chamaka Perera – Best Chef, Best 5 Course set Dinner, Best Plated Appetizers .Sheran Liyanamodarage – Best Apprentice Hot Cooking Live, Best Apprentice. Viraj Perera – Best Hot Cooking Live. Kusum Fernando – Best Petit Fours Pralines. Champika Rajapaksha – Best Butter Sculpture. Raja Selvanayagam & Kumarasiri Hewamalawige – Best New Sri Lankan Cooking. Ayeasha Paiva & Janaka Bandara - Dilmah Tea Gastronomic Challenge, Top Gold
Apart from the above Suramya Rupasinghe and Chamila Maliduwa won two Gold medals for the “Arrack Cocktail” category. Chamila Maliduwa secured Gold for the Mocktail whilst Suramya Rupasinghe won the Silver for the same category. Suramya also won a Bronze for the Beer Competition and Chamila bagged the Silver for the same category.
Moreover the young culinary team was rewarded with Gold medals for the following categories; Samila Kumarasinghe - Hot Cooking (Fish & Shellfish), Daminda De Silva – Butter Sculpture, Derric Walles & Chathuranga Peiris – Apprentice Hot Cooking/Apprentice Dessert Live, Sandra Madawala, Buddini Wijethunga and Tharinda Deegala – 03 Tier Wedding Cake. Hayamantha De Silva and Prabath Kumara – Keells Meat Challenge.
Sadun Senevirathna, a past pupil from the Deaf and Blind School won a Silver medal for the Fruit & Vegetable Carving which is an exceptional achievement. Further Sujanthi Kodithuwakku obtained silver for the Artistic Pastry Show Piece whilst Senarath Gamage won the bronze for the same category.
The Chefs Guild of Lanka is Sri Lanka's Association of Chefs who are committed towards the professional development of all chefs and cooks in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Chefs are known worldwide for their culinary talents and Hilton Colombo's Executive Chef Rohan Fernandopulle is the only Asian to be in the Club des Chef des Chefs known to be an exclusive club for the greatest of chefs from around the world.
Chef Rohan Fernandopulle and Chef Buddika Samarasekara led the culinary squad of Hilton Colombo towards success. Chef Buddhika said: “We have a hard working, creative kitchen team that can drive the future of the culinary art!”
