Fairmont Peace Hotel Honors Past & Present with Debut of New Suites & Anniversary Package
From the opening of the famed Fairmont San Francisco in 1907, delayed due to damage from the great San Francisco earthquake, Fairmont has been a brand known for storied properties in inspiring destinations. This summer Shanghai’s Fairmont Peace Hotel celebrates its 82nd anniversary and first anniversary since reopening last year with a selection of new amenities and packages.
To help celebrate, the 82 Years of Elegance Package includes one night in an Art Deco inspired room, daily access to the Fitness Centre at Fairmont’s award winning Willow Stream Spa and a guided tour of the hotel with the on-site historian. Rates start at CNY 1,700 (~$262 USD) from July 1 - August 31, 2011. An additional CNY 82 (~$13 USD), in honor of the anniversary, will let guests choose one added amenity per room such as daily breakfast at The Cathay Room, a guided Tai Chi session on the rooftop, High Tea at Jasmine Lounge or a Fairmont classic cocktail at the famed Jazz Bar.
Steeped in history spanning over eight decades, Fairmont Peace Hotel, originally founded as the Cathay Hotel, opened its doors on August 1, 1929 and its art deco design was emblematic of the vibrancy and entrepreneurial spirit of Shanghai at that time. Dubbed the ‘Number one Mansion of the Far East’, the hotel’s founder, Sir Victor Sassoon entertained guests including Charlie Chaplin, Bernard Shaw, Marlene Dietrich and General Marshall. It was here that Noel Coward completed his famous play "Private Lives" and Sir Victor’s rollicking theme parties were legendary.
The debut of the hotel’s Nine Nation Suites and Sassoon Presidential Suite marks the culmination of the extensive three-year restoration. With three unique 178-square-metre rooms on each floor, each one with panoramic views of the river and the city, the original Nine Nations Suites paid homage to the cultural and stylistic influences of both East and West on Shanghai life. The Chinese, Indian, English and American suites have been preserved, while the French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and German suites have been redesigned in keeping with their original concepts.
Each suite shows the decorative details of a nation – roses and oak leaves in the plaster molding of the ceilings in the British Suite; strong dark Art Deco paneling and fireplaces in the American Suite; and in the Japanese Suite sliding doors and tatami mats on raised floors give the quiet serenity of open room space. The Indian Suite, the roof raised in a Moghul arch, is furnished with rich colors and hanging lamps of filigree metal lace. From the door of the Chinese Suite, through the circle of the moon-gate wall and the windows beyond, is the Huangpu River, the “mother river of Shanghai”. The styles and colors of Europe are recognized in the French, German, Spanish and Italian Suites, with their fireplaces of patterned brick, wooden floors and ceilings of colored molding.
Sir Victor presided over his amazing business and social ventures from his personal penthouse at the Cathay Hotel, paneled in dark oak under the green copper pyramid tower, a signature on the Shanghai skyline. With 360-degree views of the city, today, this penthouse is now the Sassoon Presidential Suite on the 10th floor of the Fairmont Peace Hotel, offering an exclusive and glamorous place for guests to stay.
Looking into 2012, Boston’s The Fairmont Copley Plaza and Ottawa’s The Fairmont Château Laurier celebrate centennial years with a number of exciting events and special activities that highlight both their monumental histories and the vibrant communities they’ve called home for 100 years.
