Food, fun, family and freebies are some of the key elements for a great getaway and how can you go wrong when you do it in Hawaii. As Hawaii’s largest, locally owned hotel operator and management company, Outrigger Hotels & Resorts is especially well-versed on local favorites -- from the best restaurants and bars to hiking trails and art galleries. Outrigger has asked our local experts on the four main islands how to make a trip to Hawaii even more special.

The journey begins by booking a stay at one of the 23 Outrigger beachfront resorts, condominiums or city hotels, then visiting www.outrigger.com/hawaii-summer to plan the perfect itinerary using some of the suggestions from Outrigger’s staff across the island chain. With rates starting at just $79 in Waikiki, $129 on Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii, and $169 on the island of Kauai, a Hawaii vacation is closer than you think!

FOOD
“I am Hawaiian, and we Hawaiians like food,” said Luana Maitland, ambassador of aloha at Outrigger Reef on the Beach. “You could say our appetite is as expansive as the ocean horizon.” Maitland recommends that travelers hungry for a taste of the islands take their palates to favorite local venues showcasing Hawaii’s multi-cultural flavors. Her personal favorites include:
· Highway Inn serves up authentic Hawaiian food from salty Kalua pig, and lau lau alongside the traditional staple of poi.

· For the island tradition of a plate lunch, Maitland recommends Rainbow’s Drive-In and its “Mix Plate,” a heaping serving of boneless, breaded chicken with brown gravy, accompanied by teriyaki meat barbecue sticks, sautéed mahimahi, plus rice and macaroni salad.

· The Ocean House Restaurant inside Outrigger Reef on the Beach is Maitland’s choice for oceanfront dining with casual elegance; her favorite menu items include the ahi carpaccio and signature Hawaiian sea salt slow-roasted Angus prime rib.

FUN
Travelers will find plenty to do across the islands, but on Kauai, Gana Maheshwaran, the general manager at Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation, lists out his top must-try activities.
· Leading his list, Maheshwaran recommends taking a boat cruise along the Napili coastline, which includes ample stops for snorkeling in Kauai’s pristine waters.

· The Wailua Arboretum provides a serene picnic area alongside a freshwater stream, perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day.

· Outdoor enthusiasts will find a great family hike at the Limahuli Garden that’s an easy adventure for kids to enjoy.

· Maheshwaran also encourages visitors to head to the Kauai Coffee Visitor Center and Museum to learn about the coffee growing and roasting process that makes Kauai coffee divine – plus the chance to sample nearly a dozen types of the savory brew.

FAMILY
Hawaii is all about ohana (family) and travelers choosing Maui as their destination will find these family-friendly activities from Matt Swartz, general manager at Outrigger Palms at Wailea, a great addition to their vacation plans.
· Beach explorers of all ages will enjoy exploring the tide pools at Keawakapu Beach along with a day on the long stretch of golden sand and near-perfect swimming waters.

· At the Maui Ocean Center, special activities like shark dives and sleepovers for keiki to view marine life after hours are sure to be a hit with the kids.

· Swartz also encourages families to take in a Sunday afternoon of polo at the Maui Polo Club or dabble in the world of performing arts at the Maui Academy of Performing Arts’ music camps, drama camps and entertaining community productions.

FREE
Travelers looking to stretch their dollars will find that the best things in life really can be free. Paul Horner, general manager at Keauhou Beach Resort, provides tips on free activities that don’t skimp on the fun.
· Shoreline fishing along the Big Island coast or snorkeling at Kalakekua Bay both bring travelers up close and personal with the majestic outdoors.

· Families can trek out to Kua Bay for camping to mix up their Hawaiian vacation and get back to nature.

· Horner also recommends the free walking tour at the Keauhou Beach Resort where visitors can discover ancient heiaus, petroglyphs and learn about the deep Hawaiian history in the Kahaluu area.

No matter what island travelers choose, a bevy of fun and adventure awaits them. For the complete list insider tips on ono food, awesome family activities, especially fun adventures and totally free events, check out: www.outrigger.com/hawaii-summer.
