• The leading hotel company in Spain presents the “Little gift. For a more responsible Christmas” campaign through solmelia.com in cooperation with UNICEF and Intermón Oxfam.

• Sol Meliá celebrates certification as the first “Biosphere Hotel Company” with an environmentally-friendly gift for guests.

This year solmelia.com has replaced traditional Christmas price discounts with a project that aims to involve its clients in its commitment to raise awareness in the community about responsible tourism. The project involves cooperation with the non governmental organisations UNICEF and Intermón Oxfam.

The first part of the campaign focuses on supporting the work done by UNICEF to combat infant malnutrition. For every booking made at the company website www.solmelia.com, the company will donate a sufficient cash to UNICEF to buy three therapeutic “nutritional packages” which contain one day’s treatment for a child with severe malnutrition. The company website at solmelia.com will welcome visitors with the message “Help Sol Meliá fight infant malnutrition”; a message that will also be used in promotional campaigns across a wide range of media.

Sol Meliá also wishes to explain its commitment to the environment and to celebrate its certification as the first “Biosphere Hotel Company” with its guests. Solmeliá.com will also be giving an environmentally-friendly, reusable bag made from recycled plastics to every person making a booking on the website over the Christmas period, involving guests in protecting the local environment but at no extra cost to their booking.

Thanks to the agreement with Intermón Oxfam, with which the company has a close working relationship, Sol Meliá is also proud to announce its first “Photo Competition – Colours of Nature”. Participants can enter the competition through www.solmelia.com and vote for their favourite photos through the company Facebook page. The winners will receive Intermón Oxfam Christmas Hampers. Intermón Oxfam is a non-profit organisation that dedicates a large part of its activity to promoting and encouraging “fair trade”.

In the words of Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Vice Chairman and CEO of Sol Meliá, “this campaign is aimed at our customers’ hearts and confirms our focus on promoting the values of social responsibility and sustainability amongst our guests”.
