In support of the annual Operation Santa Claus charity project, Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong will kick-off its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on 1 December 2009, with Jens Corder, the hotel’s resident manager, and guests of honour including Deon Lai, director of Operation Santa Claus, Bryan Curtis from Radio Television Hong Kong Three and Santa Claus leading the festivities. To enhance the festive atmosphere, students from the Singapore International School Choir will fill the hotel lobby with a medley of carols.

The hotel will have two donation vehicles, Gingerbread Man sales and a Champagne Auction, to enable donors to contribute to this good cause. With donations of HK$80, HK$150 and HK$200, donors can have their name, initials or a short message on a small, medium and large sized gingerbread man cookie respectively, which will be hung on the lobby Christmas tree. Guests can also indulge in a specially created large gingerbread man cookie one and a half metres tall for HK$2,000, of which only three pieces will be produced. Donors can visit the Christmas ticket counter in the hotel lobby to make their donations.

In addition, donors can choose to take home a rare and valuable limited edition 15-litre bottle of Moët et Chandon Brut Impérial Champagne and share with family and friends in support of Operation Santa Claus. The 15-litre bottle of champagne, which is known as Nebuchadnezzar and worth HK$23,800, is equivalent to 20 regular 75 cl sized bottles of champagne in volume. Interested parties can join the silent auction by calling the Operation Santa Claus hotline at 2680 8159 or the sponsor, Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong, at 2367 5599, or by e-mail to osc@scmp.com or ksl@shangri-la.com with their bids. Bids may also be placed in front of the champagne on display in the hotel lobby. The opening bid price is HK$10,000 and the minimum bid increment is HK$100. The auction closes at 6 p.m. on 21 December 2009.

The schedule for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony and associated events is:
3:00 p.m. Choir performance by Singapore International School
3:15 p.m. Speech by Mr. Corder
3:20 p.m. Light up of the Christmas tree
3:21 p.m. Pastry piping bag event, where the hotel’s resident manager, the director of Operation Santa Claus and Bryan Curtis from RTHK Three will scribble their names or initials using pastry piping bags onto gingerbread man cookies

Operation Santa Claus is an annual fund-raising event organised by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) and Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and has taken place since 1998. All through December, corporations, clubs and individual donors put on a series of activities to raise funds for Operation Santa Claus, and this year all the proceeds raised will go to 13 beneficiaries in Hong Kong to aid a wide spectrum of people in need, from children and the elderly to mentally and physically challenged people.
