Beantown Discovers Sophisticated New Flagship Hotel
More than 350 Boston tastemakers toasted the grand opening of the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel last night, at a star-studded party held in conjunction with Boston Common magazine. Boston Common’s summer cover celebrity, actress Emily Mortimer, joined the festivities, as did Rita Cuddihy, senior vice president, Renaissance Hotels and Resorts, Jason Binn, founder and CEO, Niche Media, and other top VIPs. Ms. Mortimer has been spending a lot of time in Beantown lately; she co-stars in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming movie “Shutter Island,” as well as in Steve Martin’s “Pink Panther 2,” both of which were filmed in Boston.
“This stylish hotel is the latest addition to our global Renaissance portfolio, which is nearing completion of a $2 billion makeover by our owners and franchisees,” said Cuddihy. “It is also a stunning reflection of the spirit of rebirth happening on the Boston waterfront and we are deeply grateful to the property owners, Loeb Partners Realty, as well as our landlords, Massport, and for the support of the City of Boston. These are exciting times for the brand and our guests who are discovering new designs, cutting edge guest rooms, great local restaurants and lounges, and some very fun and creative signature cocktails. We have more than 140 properties worldwide, so there is plenty for travelers and locals to experience and enjoy.”
Consulting Chef Michael Schlow and Chef Toby T. Hill of the hotel’s 606 Congress restaurant collaborated on a sophisticated and fun menu for the VIP guests. After crossing the red carpet into the hotel’s stylish lobby, partygoers noshed on Striped Bass Ceviche, Duck Confit Quesadillas and Gazpacho Shots. Later in the evening, guests were invited up the hotel’s spiral staircase to the Atlantic Ballroom, where they lounged in comfortable leather seating groups, and sampled a range of tasting plates, from Kobe Beef Tartare and Heirloom Tomato Caprese, to Chef Toby T. Hill’s “Sip n’ Slide” pairings of mocktails with signature sliders. A table of sweets included one of 606 Congress restaurant’s most popular desserts, homemade root beer floats, in miniature.
One special bar was devoted to the Renaissance Hotels & Resorts “Cocktail Culture,” including Renaissance's custom cocktail blocks, which allow guests to create their own signature drinks. Each side of the cocktail block contains an element of mixology: spirits, fresh ingredients, method of preparation, and barware presentation.
Two signature martinis were also created in celebration of the Boston Celtics’ 17th victory in the NBA’s Championship. Downstairs at the party, the Celtics’ 3 Point Shot featured Stoli Blakberi, fresh cranberry and orange juice, served with a fresh orange and blackberry garnish. Upstairs, the Seventeeni (pictured on the left) combined vodka, Midori and fresh pineapple juice, straight up in all its green glory.
The Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel features 471 guestrooms and 21 suites, and over 21,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a 10,700-square-foot ballroom and a 4,400-square-foot junior ballroom, both conveniently located on the same floor. Cambridge, Massachusetts architects, KlingStubbins, created the sleek 21-story building, the profile of which resembles the sails of a ship racing in front of the wind. The hotel’s interior, developed by Beverly Hills-based Cheryl Rowley Design, celebrates the seaport setting, with marine-inspired elements, vivid colors and dramatic finishes throughout the custom-crafted artwork, furnishings and fixtures. A circular staircase captures the eye and the imagination, like a nautilus shell cast aside by an errant wave. Within this staircase void, a swirling flock of herons, commissioned by London-based designer Eva Menz, creates a stunning focal point. Meanwhile, behind the sleek front desk, a colorful installation of fishbowls, repeating in a pop art pattern, produces an irreverent splash.
This year, Renaissance has also completed major renovations in several major cities -- $24 million renovation of The Renaissance Times Square Hotel in New York, a $128 million restoration of the historic Chicago landmark, The Blackstone, a Renaissance Hotel, and a multi-million dollar makeover of The Shelbourne Dublin, a Renaissance Hotel.
