£10m Capital Investment Program Nears Completion
Fairmont St Andrews will display a new look following a £10 million refurbishment program, whose work touches on all major aspects of the resort including guest rooms, the spa, the lobby and additional public areas. In each case, the storied history of the region will be incorporated into the design.
As part of the refurbishment, 115 guest rooms are being transformed using warm earthy tones, luxurious finishes and signature Scottish touches. The Spa is also undergoing a transformation, including an expansion into a twelve-treatment room facility complete with redesigned relaxation lounge, spa reception, fitness and pool facilities. The signature experience will include a private ‘Spa in Spa’ - three treatment rooms that can be joined together for small groups seeking rejuvenation. The resort lobby, public areas and various dining outlets will complete the scope of work. Recent enhancements include the addition of a new sports-themed bar and renovations of the 15,000 square foot Conference Centre. The refurbished function space features a 6,000 sq ft ballroom, theatre for up to 120, exterior terrace, and nearby ‘byre’ (barn) perfect for an authentic Scottish event, complete with piper.
A further phase of bedroom refurbishment will begin winter 2008, to complete the entire guest room redesign.
Complementing the resort renovations is a refurbishment, supervised by architect Gary Stephenson, of the Torrance golf course. Currently the course is closed and scheduled to re-open spring 2009. The renovations, designed to improve turf consistency and the player experience, include the rebuilding and relocations of tees, new irrigation and drainage systems, replanting of native plants and design enhancements. The Torrance was the first design by the victorious 2002 European Ryder Cup captain, Sam Torrance, and this par 72 course incorporates cliff-edge holes and stunning views over the North Sea and the medieval skyline of St Andrews.
Located a few miles south of St Andrews, the acclaimed “home of golf”, the 209-room resort features five dining outlets, a 3,500 square foot spa and health club and a second 18-hole golf course - The Devlin (created by Bruce Devlin) where the breathtaking Fife coastline is an intrinsic feature of the layout of this par 72 7,049 yard championship course. Within a short drive of the town are another 20 golf courses, including the venerated Old Course. While renowned for its golf, St Andrews is also home to Scotland’s first university and offers myriad restaurants, antique shops, galleries, historic attractions, botanical gardens and parks to explore. Other activities include fishing, boating, parakarting and mountain boarding.
