In an exclusive interview for Journal des Palaces, Stuart shares his passion, his missions, and defines the competitive spirit that drives him every day.

Journal des Palaces: You are cluster manager for Minor group in the Maldives. What are your responsibilities in this role?

Stuart de San Nicolas: As a cluster manager in luxury hospitality in the Maldives for Minor Group, I face several strategic and operational challenges. Coordinating and supervising multiple hotel properties spread across different islands involves juggling varied requirements in terms of operations, local cultures, and specific regulations at each site.

A crucial aspect of my role is to maintain high luxury standards across all properties under my responsibility. This includes not only ensuring impeccable customer service and quality facilities but also ensuring consistency in the customer experience and brand integrity in each establishment.

Team management is another major challenge. Encouraging and motivating a multicultural team of managers and staff requires an inclusive and adaptive approach, while promoting a corporate culture harmonized with local and individual specificities.

To ensure continued business growth, I develop and implement strategies tailored to each property, taking into account market trends, customer needs, and short, medium, and long-term financial goals. As a GM, I must also be prepared to effectively manage crises and unforeseen events, such as critical health situations, natural disasters, or economic fluctuations, while ensuring business continuity and customer satisfaction.

Sustainability and social responsibility are essential priorities. Promoting sustainable and responsible practices within our operations is crucial, considering the environmental impact in a fragile island environment like the Maldives.

Finally, cultivating strong partnerships with local suppliers, government authorities, and local communities is essential to support our operations and foster mutually beneficial development.

In summary, being a cluster manager in luxury hospitality in the Maldives requires wise strategic management, the ability to navigate multicultural environments, and a determination to maintain standards of excellence while addressing the unique challenges of this paradisiacal setting.

Team management: We recruit, train, and motivate a talented team, fostering a positive and professional work environment where each staff member aligns with the brand's culture and goals.
  • Brand promotion: As a brand ambassador, I am actively involved in promoting the hotel locally, nationally, and internationally. This includes developing strategic partnerships, participating in industry events, and using social media and other channels to enhance the visibility and image of the establishment.
  • External relations management: I cultivate strong relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, business partners, suppliers, and the local community, ensuring that the hotel is perceived as a responsible and respected player within the destination.
