Shangri-La hotels are known to be architectural marvels with stunning vistas and lavish interiors. As their latest Find Your Shangri-La campaign invite guest to, I set myself to at least find my new Shangri-La home in the Emirates. Through a wealth of amazing culinary experiences, interactions with attentive teams and mesmerising properties, I eventually did.
Shangri-La Dubai: A sanctuary in bustling Dubai
Strategically located on Sheikh Zayed Road, Shangri-La Dubai stands as a beacon of luxury in the heart of the city. Just minutes away from Dubai Mall and City Walk, this urban oasis offers a perfect blend of convenience and opulence. As you step into the recently revamped 42-storey sanctuary, you're immediately enveloped by a sense of grandeur that sets the tone for an unforgettable moment.
Welcome to a lavish atmosphere
The lobby, a grand atrium adorned with majestic Lasvit chandeliers, casts a warm glow over royal burgundy and gold hues, promising a stay fit for royalty. The check-in desk features an intriguing backdrop - a striking art piece composed of hundreds of books in a babel of languages. Despite its grandeur, there's a comforting familiarity in the air that makes guests feel instantly at home. As I get to sit with Hakan Ozel, managing director of the property, there's an obvious quiet and comfortable atmosphere that visitors can enjoy when organising meetings at the property.
The property's location in the Financial District provides a slightly quieter atmosphere while still keeping guests close to Dubai's main attractions.
Rooms that leave you wanting for more
Shangri-La Dubai boasts 302 rooms with stunning views of the ever-evolving skyline or the Arabian Sea. Visiting a room, one is immediately impressed by the cocoon of luxuriousness offering a cinematic sweep of Dubai's skyline. These corner retreats come with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Burj Khalifa in a tableau so vivid it feels within reach. Plush carpets, a marble-encased bathroom, and a colour palette that whispers luxury in shades of grey and gold set the tone for a sumptuous stay.
Relaxing and recharging after a long day
Shangri-La Dubai offers a wealth of activities to keep guests entertained.
For those looking to explore, the hotel's location provides easy access to Dubai's main attractions, with Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa just a 15-minute taxi ride away. The hotel also features health club amenities like a gym, sauna, and plunge pool on the 42nd floor.
For me, the poolside on the fourth floor with tasty cocktails and attentive staff was the vibe of the moment. Laying on chic white sunbeds and vibrant pink towels set against the Burj Khalifa's backdrop made it for a calm city break moment.
As experienced during an organised party, come the night, the space transforms into a lively hub, with shisha, music, and a DJ setting the evening's tone.
To start the evening on a glamorous note, ladies can first indulge in the "Red Dress Experience" whereby the property lend a long red dress for a photoshoot against the breathtaking Dubai Financial District and glorious Burj Khalifa. Prepare to break your Instagram.
Tastes of Asia at their best
The culinary offerings at Shangri-La Dubai were a highlight of my visits. Shang Palace, the group's signature Chinese restaurant, offers a dim sum lunch and an array of authentic dishes, that my host skilfully chose for our table. Visual experience, varied textures and spiced dishes makes you remember what Chinese cuisine stand for. The golden garlic prawns and crispy soft-shell crab were some of my favourite.
The first Shang Palace opened in 1974 in Singapore, and is a must-visit when possible.
For the evening, Hoi An, the Vietnamese gem, dazzles with its crispy rolls and masterfully balanced curries. The dishes, the cocktails and the atmosphere make for a perfect dinner for any occasion, for corporate to romantic occasions.
After dinner, head to the bar next door, nestled behind a district entrance to enjoy some live music and well crafted drinks by one of the barmaids showcasing dazzling cocktail-crafting skills.
With attentive teams, larger than live spaces, and on brand dining offering, Shangri-La Dubai stands out for its urban sophistication and stunning views of the city's iconic skyline. Its strategic location makes it an ideal choice for both business and leisure travellers looking to experience the vibrant energy of Dubai.
Once you had a taste of Dubai and its endless discoveries, new adventures await in Abu Dhabi.
Shangri-La Abu Dhabi: An Oasis for a cultural trip
A two-hour drive from Dubai, with its Louvre Museum, Abrahamic Family House, and authentic all around feel, Abu Dhabi as become a favourite amongst visitors looking for a quieter and more cultural stay in the Emirates. When visiting, the Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri is the ideal oasis.
The Epitome of Arab Style
Nestled between a pristine 1-kilometre-long private beach and lush gardens, Shangri-La Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi is truly an oasis in the heart of the Emirates. Located on the banks of the Khor Al Maqta creek, the hotel offers breathtaking views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, creating a serene backdrop for a luxurious authentic stay.
The property celebrates authentic Arabian architecture throughout its 213 rooms, suites, and villas. From quintessential arched doorways to oversized marble mosaic bathrooms, every detail exudes Middle Eastern charm. The hotel's location provides easy access to Abu Dhabi's main attractions, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque just a 10-minute drive away and the water and theme parks of Yas Island within a 15-minute reach.
One of the hotel's most striking features is its system of waterways, allowing guests to travel through the hotel grounds by traditional Arabic boats known as abras. This unique touch adds to the property's Arabian Nights ambiance and provides a novel way to explore the resort.
Opulent and practical rooms
The property boast several category rooms from the 45sqm Deluxe room up to 400sqm Presidential Suite and 600sqm Family or Samar Celebration Villas. I stayed at the Horizon Club Premier Room which offered an expansive living space with unique Arabesque design touches and a balcony with ample seating. The 67 sqm room featured a spacious marble mosaic bathroom, equipped with walk-in rainfall shower, a deep-soaking bathtub, an office space and a walk-in closet. A little while after my arrival, a tea pot was served to my room, leading to a lovely moment on the balcony, sipping on my drink while enjoying the sea and Mosque view, as the temperature cooled down.
One signature gesture I come to enjoy during my travels in the area, was the display of fresh fruits and dates. A healthy and welcomed snack upon settling in a new hotel.
Making the most of the grounds
I already mentioned activities that one can enjoy in Abu Dhabi but the Shangri-La Abu Dhabi itself offers a range of activities to suit all preferences. It boasts three outdoor pools, including a stunning infinity pool overlooking the mosque. The poolside service is impeccable, with staff setting up chairs with towels and little iceboxes filled with chilled water.
One of my favourite, and unique, experience, was the breakfast on an abra, cruising along the hotel's internal waterways. The 45-minute ride includes a captain and music, offering a delightful start to the day. As I cruise down the river, a figure appears on the bank for a joyful Good morning. It's Ahmed Issa, the General Manager; our conversations and his humour have been punctuating my stay, adding to the charm of the property.
Far from being underwhelming, the activities blended well with the atmosphere soaked in grandiose luxury of this quiet oasis. Still, the hotel's proximity to attractions like Yas Island and Heritage Island also provides ample opportunity for off-site adventures.
Fusion of flavours
The culinary offerings at Shangri-La Abu Dhabi are diverse and unexpected. Sofra bld, the hotel's all-day dining restaurant, offers an extensive buffet that I enjoyed for lunch. Multiple live-cooking stations allow guests to interact with chefs and choose from a wide range of authentic Arabic and Asian dishes.
As I got to enjoy Shang Palace several times, this visit was an opportunity to try more dim sum, soft shell crab and stir-fried scallops with XO sauce and Beijing duck. The restaurant has won several awards, and it's easy to come back to find new dishes to taste.
For fine dining enthusiasts, Bord Eau offers contemporary French cuisine by globally acclaimed Chef Nicolas Isnard. It added to the experience to have the Chef visit the table and share how he married some of the flavours. The menu, inspired by his travels, features innovative dishes like artichoke soup with parmesan and fresh truffle, and Wagyu beef tenderloin "Rossini style" with foie gras and fresh truffle.
Taking in the moon's reflection on the sea from the restaurant terrace makes for a perfect end of the evening, and stay.
As I say goodbye to Ahmed and his wonderful team, I'm already wondering how the property in Muscat will manage to win my heart.
Shangri-La Muscat El Husn: A Luxurious Adults-Only gem in Muscat
As I land in Muscat, for my first time in Oman, I'm excited to discover what has been described to me as an "unforgettable place". It takes a drive through Muscat, then the mountains before finally getting a glimpse of the property. Like an actual jewel to be discovered at the end of a trail. Its full glory is yet to be seen. Shangri-La Al Husn stands as an adults-only luxury haven. Part of the larger Barr Al Jissah complex, this exclusive retreat offers a perfect blend of Omani hospitality and world-class amenities. With its name meaning "castle" in Arabic, Al Husn lives up to its regal moniker, with a welcoming team, a cup of local tea, subtle frankincense scent and a decor showcasing traditional sophistication and serenity.
Breathtaking sea views
Shangri-La Al Husn boasts an enviable location, perched atop a cliff with breathtaking views of the Gulf of Oman. The group has been untrusted by the royal family with giving life to that stretch of land, and the resort's architecture is a testament to Omani heritage, featuring Moorish design elements and Islamic influences throughout. With just 180 rooms and suites, the property maintains an intimate atmosphere while offering access to the extensive facilities of the adjoining Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah. The resort's design, reminiscent of an Omani fort, creates a sense of place that immerses visitors in the rich culture of the Sultanate.
One thousand and one dreams
The spacious rooms and suites from 48 sqm to 500 sqm for the Royal Suite feature a blend of traditional Omani aesthetics and modern amenities. The Luban Spa toiletries, and Shangri-La's signature beds with patented body-contouring technology ensure restful nights. My 48 sqm Al Husn Deluxe Sea View room, offered a generous living area, walk-in wardrobe, and balcony offering panoramic views of the coastline. One of those views to make your friends and family envious.
All rooms are equipped with modern conveniences with a bathroom featuring both a rainfall shower and a deep-soaking bathtub. Unique touches like binoculars for bird watching and stargazing, as well as coffee table books on Omani history, add to the cultural immersion. The complimentary minibar replenished daily, and in-room amenities like afternoon tea and pre-dinner drinks elevate the experience, and make for a comfortable break while in the room or enjoying the views from the balcony with a little snack.
Connecting with the ecosystem
Shangri-La Al Husn offers a wealth of activities to suit every preference, and I wanted to make sure to make the most of the water. One of the perks of Al Husn is that guests can enjoy their exclusive stay, while enjoying the amenities available across the Barr Al Jissah complex.
Jet skying will satisfy the adrenaline junkies out there - I'm not one, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it, at my own pace - while snorkelling is the must if you want a chance to observe sea turtles and colourful fishes.
Turtles are actually part and parcel of the resort's life, El Husn private beach being a turtle nesting site, with opportunities to witness turtle hatching between May and September.
After a tanning session or swimming at the private beach, one can relax at the Luban Spa at Al Husn for a rejuvenating moment, with many treatments infused with local ingredients like frankincense. Active guests can enjoy tennis courts, an aerial yoga pavilion, and a mini-golf course. Cultural experiences abound, with opportunities to learn about Omani frankincense from local experts and visit the on-site car museum featuring vintage vehicles. For a unique adventure, guests can float along the falaj-inspired lazy river connecting Al Waha and Al Bandar. The resort also arranges dolphin-watching tours and snorkelling excursions with sea turtles.
A taste for each moment
The culinary offerings, diverse and authentic, were also a highlight. For the first lunch, we enjoyed a tasting selection at the Sultanah, prepared by Chef Eric Fettke, which Mediterranean-inspired dishes including fresh salads, seafood, and original sharable plates. For the dining experience, Aangan by Rohit Ghai offered contemporary Indian cuisine on a terrace overlooking the beach. The menu with options for the starter, main and dessert is a perfect chance to try most of the flavours and the staff is very helpful at choosing the best options for one's tastes.
Casual dining options include Al Muheet Pool Bar, perfect for light bites and refreshments throughout the day, as well as Mahhara Beach Bar, which I enjoyed for my second lunch overlooking the private beach.
By then, I got used to being driven in a club car across the resort for each experience. When the weather gets as hot as it can in the region, it's a very appreciated necessity more than a lazy treat.
As I leave Shangri-La Al Husn, literally waving goodbye to Nick Flynn, the hotel manager and his extraordinary team, I remember what I had been told. And I have to agree that the property truly stands out through its unparalleled blend of luxury, natural beauty, human warmth and history.
And My Shangri-La is…
Reminiscing of my itinerary, what truly sets the Shangri-La brand apart is its exceptional staff and their commitment to service excellence. From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped in warm hospitality, attentiveness and professionalism. Combined with convenient or stunning locations, luxurious accommodations, and diverse amenities, Shangri-La Emirati properties live up to the group's reputation leaving an unforgettable feeling.
When I close my eyes, though, I see turquoise waters, white sand, heads adorned with Omani turbans and giant turtles waving! I think I found My Shangri-La.
