UNWTO is pleased to announce the joint organization of a World Tourism Conference with the Government of Malaysia to look specifically at the best ways to market tourism destinations. ‘Tourism Success Stories and Shooting Stars’ will be held from 4 to 6 June 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, and will constitute one of the main events of “Visit Malaysia Year 2007”, coinciding with the country’s 50th Anniversary of Independence.

UNWTO has been closely supporting the Ministry of Tourism in the organization of the event, helping bring together leading speakers from around the world to talk about best practices and in particular new ways to present destinations.

“The capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a particularly apt venue for this meeting, given the country’s success with its highly acclaimed ‘Malaysia truly Asia’ promotional campaign. Given increasing competition, even successful destinations need to keep constantly abreast of new developments, which is why UNWTO will be looking to introduce other perspectives from around the globe, building on experience gained from recent conferences held in Brazil and Hungary”, says UNWTO Regional Representative for Asia Xu Jing.

The conference aims at analyzing and imparting information on strategies developed by leading destinations and organisations by sharing their experience on marketing, product development and partnership; drawing attention to the benefits of sustainable growth in tourism; encouraging tourism as a tool in the fight against poverty and encouraging environmental protection.

UNWTO believes that sharing the experience of successful destinations and organizations will help increase total world tourism to the advantage of all, and will also help spread the benefits of tourism to less developed countries, thereby making an important contribution to one of the organisation’s principal goals – poverty alleviation.

This Conference will bring together a wide range of reputed world leaders in tourism, high-level policy makers, specialists and experts from both the public and private sectors, to exchange experiences, put forward valuable ideas and provide guidance for future tourism development. It will be of particular interest to National, Regional and Local Tourism Organisations as well as Non-Governmental Organisations and key tourism players in their field of expertise.
