110 Room Luxury Boutique Hotel’s New Owner to Enhance Reputation for Quiet Elegance, Unrivaled Guest Service
Taj’s Third U.S. Hotel is First in West as Expansion Continues
Internationally-Trained New General Manager Hand Picked by CEO
Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces takes over Campton Place, San Francisco, a Taj Hotel, on April 30, following completion of its $58 million acquisition of the 110-room luxury European-style hotel adjacent to Union Square between the city’s financial and shopping districts.
Taj, which owns and manages a portfolio of 77 luxurious, historic and contemporary hotels worldwide, will enhance Campton Place’s original reputation for quiet elegance, unrivaled guest service, privacy and style, pledged Raymond Bickson, Managing Director and CEO of Indian Hotels Company Ltd., which operates Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces.
“Campton Place defined excellence in the art of hospitality and fine dining in San Francisco for leisure and business travelers when it re-opened in 1984 as the city’s first true small luxury hotel,” said Bickson. “Some of America’s most innovative chefs launched their reputations at the Campton Place restaurant. My goal is to build its stature as San Francisco’s premier address for discerning travelers and for everyone who loves an exceptional dining experience.”
Bickson said he has appointed one of Taj’s most accomplished hoteliers as the new General Manager. “Vikram Aditya Singh has perfect credentials for leading Campton Place in this great city known for its fine hotels and restaurants. He has proven himself as General Manager of the widely acclaimed Taj Exotica Resort and Spa in the Maldives. Earlier, he was Operations Director of Taj Safari Lodges in India and Director of Food and Beverage at two of our palaces in India. He understands the sophisticated traveler, and the importance of efficient and gracious service in an intimate-sized hotel.”
Before joining Taj, Singh spent five years with Four Seasons Hotels and worked in three of its Mobil 5-star, AAA 5-diamond hotels in Chicago, Vancouver and Seattle. He is an honors graduate of the renowned Swiss Hotel Association’s Les Roches School of Hotel Management.
Taj officials again confirmed there will be no large scale personnel changes following the acquisition. The hotel will honor all prior bookings for hotel rooms, restaurants and conferences.
Acquired from Kor Hotel Group, Campton Place is the third luxury hotel in the Taj portfolio in North America and the first on the West Coast, and is part of the company’s expansion program in the US market. In 2005, Taj Hotels entered into a lease agreement to operate and manage The Pierre, the luxurious landmark hotel on New York’s Fifth Avenue. Earlier this year, it assumed full ownership of the 1927 Boston landmark hotel overlooking the city’s Public Garden at Arlington and Newbury streets and renamed it Taj Boston.
Further acquisitions are planned in U.S. gateway cities. Internationally, Taj acquired the 100-room W Hotel in Sydney’s central business district 15 months ago and is expanding into China, South Africa and the Middle East.
Campton Place, San Francisco, a Taj Hotel, has a 98-year-old heritage. It re-opened in 1984 when two buildings that date back to 1909 and 1910 were combined into one. Today, it has 101 guest rooms, nine suites, a restaurant, bar, fitness center and high speed broadband Internet access in the rooms and wireless Internet access in the lobby and public areas.
