Baglioni Hotels & Resorts has selected Reuben Brothers, a leader in the private-equity, investment and property development sectors, to launch a strategic partnership to drive the brand’s international growth, overseen by Baglioni Hotels & Resorts CEO Guido Polito.
This structured initiative includes the sale and leaseback of the iconic Baglioni Hotel Luna near St Mark’s Square in the heart of Venice. This historic hotel and former 12th-century aristocratic mansion embodies the essence of this remarkable city to perfection. The Knights Templar are said to have taken refuge here in 1118, and it is now also home to a fine art gallery. The Marco Polo room, the traditional setting for breakfast, is a particular gem, with a ceiling adorned by magnificent 18th-century frescoes by pupils of Giambattista Tiepolo.
With its 93 rooms and suites vaunting enchanting views of San Giorgio’s island, the Baglioni Hotel Luna is the Reuben brothers’ second investment in the city, after their recent acquisition of Il Palazzo Experimental, looking on to the Giudecca Canal. It is their latest hotel development investment in Europe, following other properties in Italy (Capri and Rome) and Switzerland (Verbier). The company’s London interests include the In & Out Club in Piccadilly, the Mondrian Shoreditch and The Curtain members’ club, opening soon. In the USA, the Reubens have recently acquired The Surrey Hotel, the iconic property on New York’s Upper East Side.
“The acquisition of one of the leading luxury hotels in Venice plays perfectly into our wider strategy and complements our existing portfolio, which now also includes the famous La Palma Hotel in Capri. The investment further underlines our belief in the strength of the Venice market. We are also pleased to work with Baglioni Hotels & Resorts Group in developing their brand into new markets”, commented Jamie Reuben.
“I am proud that such an important financial partner shares my vision for developing our brand in Italy and abroad and that they have recognised its value in the luxury hotel sector. This is a mark of the excellent work that has made the Baglioni brand a symbol of Italian hospitality over many years”, said Guido Polito, CEO since 2011.
Baglioni Hotel Luna is the oldest and most historic hotel in the city. It is currently undergoing a restyle that will be complete in time for the summer season. When it reopens, the hotel will offer refurbished rooms, a new bar and a restaurant run by a Michelin 2-star chef, plus a spa with sauna, massage centre, Turkish bath and relaxation area.
The entire refurbishment project is led by Patrimonia Real Estate, a specialist European property development and investment company helmed by Niccolò Belingardi Clusoni. Their vision, shared by the Reuben brothers, is to bring the timeless elegance of Italian hospitality to new selected markets.
Baglioni Hotels & Resorts is advised by Casucci Di Tardo & Associati (CDT Legal), KPMG Studio Associato Consulenza legale e tributaria, and Azimut Libera Impresa.
