Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE:MAR) announced today that it has been named one of the "Top 25 Places To Work" for African-American women by ESSENCE magazine.
"Diversity is important to the growth and success of our business," said David Rodriguez, executive vice president, human resources, Marriott International. "We believe in nurturing talented individuals and strongly support the advancement of women in our company. We are honored to be recognized."
More than 60 percent of Marriott associates are minorities and 46 percent are women. Marriott also achieved its highest number of minority college recruits last year -- 30.5 percent were minorities and 16 percent were African-American.
Marriott has made an ongoing commitment to diversity in all areas of its business. Marriott established the Committee for Excellence in 2003 to monitor the ongoing progress of diversity across the company. Earlier this year, the Committee reported that historic benchmarks were reached companywide over the past year -- $400 million spent with women and minority-owned suppliers; 400 hotels opened, or in the pipeline, owned or managed by minorities or women; and an all-time high in diverse appointments to management positions.
Marriott has received broad recognition for its diversity initiatives. Recent recognitions include: "Top 30 Companies for Executive Women" by the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE); "Top 50 Companies for Black MBAs To Work" by Black MBA Magazine; and the "Top 50 Companies for Diversity" by DiversityInc magazine.
