This is the fourth consecutive time that Kempinski’s Seychelles property has been recognised by SSTL (a Seychelles-based voluntary sustainable tourism management and certification programme) for their efforts to adopt sustainable business practices that safeguard the biodiversity and culture of Seychelles. Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare was one of the first hotels to be recognised by SSTL when the programme was created and has continuously met the criteria assessed by independent SSTL assessors in biannual audits.

For the second year in a row, the Baie Lazare hotel has also achieved Silver Certified status from EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for the travel and tourism industry. A rigorous assessment evaluated the hotel’s waste management, energy and water conservation, commitment policies and community engagement in a two-day audit, during which it was determined that the hotel had demonstrated admirable improvements since their previous EarthCheck audit in 2018.

These achievements follow closely an announcement made by Kempinski Hotels at a recent general manager’s conference held in Havana, Cuba, in which the luxury hotel group declared its commitment to eradicate plastic from its operations.

Benedikt Jaschke, the group’s vice president of operational strategy and quality management, commended the group on steps it had already taken to reduce the use of plastic in its hotels – plastic straws were completely removed from Kempinski hotels worldwide in 2019 – and outlined plans to further enhance the Kempinski guest experience by implementing more sustainable solutions into the group’s operational strategy.

Jaschke unveiled a range of new guest amenities to be introduced in 2020, including bamboo combs and dental kits and new sustainable packaging for the luxury chain’s range of Ferragamo bath amenities.

‘We commend those hotels that have already taken the initiative to remove plastic from their operations since 2018,’ said Jaschke. ‘Remember, it’s not just Kempinski who says “thank you”, as our planet, seas and our future will also thank you!’

As a global company, with plans to operate in over 40 countries in 2022, Kempinski is committed to integrating sustainable hotel operations into the life of the local communities in which it operates. By working with organisations such as EarthCheck and SSTL, Kempinski demonstrates its commitment towards implementing more efficient and sustainable ways of doing business.
