With just 11 days remaining before Sleep & Eat opens its doors at London Olympia on 19-20 November, Europe’s leading show for innovation and design in hospitality has just announced an array of additional features for those eager to be inspired.
The Conference is promising to take delegates to the outer reaches of hospitality with ‘Under & Above’ revelations to inspire. Johannes Torpe, the Danish design activist, former Chief Creative Director of Bang & Olufsen and advocate for an unrestrained and intuitive approach to design as well as life in general, will consider what the future holds for space tourism and how to go about creating the “unearthly” on Earth. The “other earthly” will also be on the minds of the Under panel. Richard Coutts, Principal of Baca Architects, the UK’s foremost architectural practice designing on, near or under water, and Ben Fitzgerald, Director of Core Marine, the engineering firm which helped realise the headline-grabbing Under restaurant, will discuss the potential of underwater hospitality and argue that an ecologically aware future in fact demands that we pay more attention to designing with water.

Conference keynotes will feature hospitality game-changers from around the globe. Christoph Hoffmann, CEO of 25 Hours Hotels, Amar Lalvani, CEO of Standard International and Josh Wyatt, CEO of NeueHouse will be sharing their experience and the vision which has singled out them and their enterprises as stars in today’s hospitality firmament. Other sessions will include insightful discussion about the latest in F&B, the challenge of designing hospitality spaces to meet both the social and privacy needs of contemporary guests and – just announced - Steve Pete, Co-Founder of Ormeau Baths and Founder of Think Hearts + Minds, will join a panel of operators debating ‘People Driven vs. Data Driven’, moderated by Robin Sheppard, Chairman of Bespoke Hotels.

Experience ‘Social FlexAbility’

One of the event’s favourites are the concept room Sets, designed afresh each year. With the 2019 theme of “Social FlexAbility”, six international design and architecture firms and their supplier & build partners will be exploring what hospitality can contribute to human interaction in our age of digital isolation. They are:

Guestroom: HAT Design

Build partner: Stilles. Project suppliers include: Bette (flooring), Nobilis (fabrics), Gessi (sanitary ware).

Guestroom: Maria Tibblin & Co

Build Partner: Bailey & Jones. Project suppliers include: Giacomo Rossetti (interior architect), Erreuno SRL (fine joinery and bathroom), Natta.co (smart voice technology), Carl Hansen (furniture), Bang & Olufsen (sound system), Tarkett (flooring), Toyine Sellers (fabrics), Vandra Rugs (rugs), GBHK Lighting & Light Cognitive Oy (lighting).

I strongly believe that we are in the transition towards a New Luxury which respects our needs for a healthy life in every regard. Through my Set, I wish to awaken all the senses with a bespoke, functional and sophisticated design, merging Scandinavian and Italian styles”. Maria Tibblin

Guestroom: Miaja Design Group

Build partner: Scena. Project suppliers include: SNS Group, Giobagnara, Dimplex (furniture), MM Galleri (custom marble), Lasvit in collaboration with Isabelle Miaja (glass art sculpture), Tentsile (custom tent), Rugged (carpet), Soraa in collaboration with Lutron (lighting), Bang & Olufsen (sound system), Adrian Houston (art), Volker Bassen (fossilised clamshell from Kenya).

Guestroom: twenty2degrees

Build partner: Viriato Hotel Concept. Project suppliers include: Contardi Lighting (lighting), Ulster Carpets (bespoke rug), Solus Ceramics (stone marble), Hansgrohe (brassware), Altrock Surfaces (vanity), Tarkett (flooring), Hamilton (sockets & switches), Peter Millard & Partners (art), Bang & Olufsen (sound system).

The process has been fascinating,” says Joe Stella of twenty2degrees. “Essentially, we were our own client freed from the usual constraints of commercial hotel design. We followed certain paths of thought, then found new sources of inspiration and were able to flip the aesthetic.” Fellow Director, Nick Stoupas, adds: “We’ll be incorporating a music playlist, dynamic lighting, lots of bold colour and materiality. And we’re shaking it all up”.

Restaurant: NAME Architecture

Build partner: Douboulay Contracts. Project suppliers include: Craster (accessories), Ligne Roset (furniture), Matière Grise (lighting), Omexco (wall coverings).

Bar: SpaceInvader

Build partner: J Carey Design. Project suppliers include: Enigma Lighting (lighting), Egger (laminate), Vescom (upholstery & wallcoverings), Kvadrat (curtains), Kriskadecor (chain ceiling), Telegraph Contract Furniture, COR (furniture), Modulyss (carpet), Havwoods (flooring).

Other pop-up spaces – all specially designed for Sleep & Eat – will include The Hub, a space for co-working, networking, and relaxing away from the busy exhibition floor, created by the London arm of Wilson Associates; the VIP Lounge, designed by Moscow-based MEGRE INTERIORS that will transform the oak panelled Olympia Club Room into a flora and fauna-inspired space with social gatherings at its heart; and the Sleeper Bar, which will host the late evening networking on day one and is being designed by Michaelis Boyd. A specially curated soundtrack will feature in VIP Lounge, Sleeper Bar and The Hub, curated by Music Concierge in collaboration with the designers.

Just released diary dates:
