Belmond La Résidence d’Angkor has reopened as an all-suite hotel following a six-month closure for refurbishment. The redesigned property, nestled in centuries-old jungles in the heart of Siem Reap, is inspired by the classical Khmer era, which is best exemplified by Cambodia’s great Angkor Wat temple located less than 10 minutes from the hotel. It now includes 59 suites with private terraces, a curated art collection, a revamped fine dining restaurant with a new outdoor space, a casual poolside grill, and a cocktail lounge.
The interiors – a collaboration between London’s GA Design and Cambodia-based Beyond Design– feature handwoven jewel-coloured silks, traditionally-crafted hardwood furnishings and ironmongery created by local artisans.
Southeast Asian art specialist Roger Nelson curated an art collection for the property that is intended to connect guests with both ancient and modern Cambodian culture. To complement these displays, Nelson was also tapped to bring in a selection of books for the hotel’s new library.
Featuring a new outdoor space, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant has reopened as Spice Circle, serving traditional Cambodian and Khmer cuisine along with pop-up tuk tuk food displays. For a more casual bite by the pool, Ember is now home to a pizza oven and show kitchen, allowing guests to watch the chefs at work. An indoor-outdoor cocktail and tapas bar, the Martini Lounge, offers organic Asian cuisine with a Latin twist.
