Since 2011 The Oberoi, Bali’s turtle hatchery and sanctuary has released 3,934 baby turtles and so far this year 123 baby turtles, have been released. The team at The Oberoi, Bali is proud to play an active role in sea turtle protection and conservation and share this unique experience with our guests.
The nearly 500 metre-wide stretch of beach in front of The Oberoi, Bali, is a turtle nesting ground, and over the last three years, between the months of May and August, the hotel has recorded 16 different instances of female ‘Olive Ridley’ (Lepidochelys Olivacea) turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. The Olive Ridley is the second-smallest and most abundant of the sea turtle species, named for the olive green colour of its heart-shaped carapace, or shell, with the adults weighing up to 50kg and reaching up to 70cm in length.
The staff at the hotel safeguards the turtle eggs from predators by moving the eggs and reburying them within a secure, fenced, sandy plot within the hotel grounds alongside the beach. They constantly observe and monitor the process. Incubation takes approximately 60 days and the hatchlings usually emerge at night, erupting from the nest cavity as a group. If left to their own devices, the little turtles would orient themselves towards the brightest horizon, and then dash towards the sea in a perilous journey where, if they didn’t make it to the ocean quickly, many would die of dehydration in the sun or be caught by predators. At The Oberoi’s turtle sanctuary, the vulnerable hatchlings are fed and cared for in a newly-built saltwater holding tank until they are about two weeks old, by which time their chances of survival in the ocean will have increased.
So far this year, eight clutches have been laid in the sands of Seminyak Beach in front of The Oberoi, Bali. Two clutches have already hatched and 123 baby turtles were released into the sea. The last turtle released was on 11th July 2016 with the participation of the hotel’s guests. With more clutches due to hatch in July and August and hopefully more turtles coming ashore both this season and in future seasons to lay their eggs on this very special stretch of beach, there should be ample more opportunities for guests to witness this miracle of nature. Meanwhile, The Oberoi, Bali will wholeheartedly continue the legacy of turtle conservation in this area.
