Since spring 2015, Hotel Maria Cristina, a Luxury Collection Hotel boasts a new cooking school in partnership with the culinary specialists at San Sebastián Food. This collaboration started in 2014 with the opening of a gourmet shop stocked with carefully curated artisan products from the Basque region and the rest of Spain. The cooking school and gourmet shop help position the hotel as the place to enjoy and explore San Sebastián’s culinary treasures, one of the strong points of this elegant city that has brought it worldwide fame.
Jon Warren, founder of San Sebastián Food, commented, “Our move to the exclusive Hotel Maria Cristina marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for the growth of our business. We are thrilled with this partnership and the positive feedback that we have received for our classes and tours. With this marvellous project now becoming a reality, we are confident that it will be a culinary reference in all of the Basque Country.”
Stijn Oyen, General Manager, Hotel Maria Cristina added, “San Sebastián is the culinary capital of the world, with more Michelin stars per capita than anywhere else on the planet. We are thrilled to provide our clients and visitors with these new and authentic epicurean experiences together with San Sebastián Food, reinforcing the hotel’s position as the destination authority in this wonderful city.”
San Sebastián Food Cooking School, with separate access from Calle Oquendo, is open to both guests and non-guests of the hotel. Spanning 500sqm, the cooking school features a professionally outfitted kitchen with workspaces accommodating up to 18 people, an educational space dedicated to the history of Basque cuisine, private bar and dining room, as well as function rooms and event spaces suited for wine tastings, intimate celebrations, product presentations, talks and demonstration. Everyone from amateurs to culinary experts can enjoy show-cooking sessions, themed tasting dinners with wines selected by the oenologist at San Sebastián Food and interactive classes in the immersive space.
San Sebastián Food Cooking School offers a wide range of classes and workshops ideal for global explorers and epicureans who wish to discover the region and its rich culinary offerings. Master classes focus on topics such as how to make pintxos (Basque equivalent to Spanish tapas) and carve Iberian ham. Guests can also learn modern cooking techniques such as spherification and foam creation or the traditional art of preserving fish, fruit and vegetables. The classes are organised in collaboration with famed cooks including Edorta Lamo (A Fuego Negro), Paul Arrillaga (Bar Zazpi), Ismael Iglesias (Kata 4), Ander Esarte (Restaurante Txuleta), Josean Calvo (Bar Zeruko) and Kenji (Kenji Sushi).
